Stock Splitting
Plan Boosts
Steel Shares
NEW YORK, Jan. 26-A1)-U. S.
Steel common stock was the toast
of today's market.
Orders to buy streamed into the
exchange and raised the price 4
points to 77. The buying rush
was touched off by news that di
rectors had voted a special $1
common dividend and recom
mended to stockholders a proposal
to split the stock on the basis of
three shares for one. In addition,
the company reported the largest
earnings in 1948 since 1929.
Interest in big steel appeared to
spread to other steel stocks. The
balance of the market, though,
turned in a sloppy performance.
While leading steels moved up
fractions to around 3 points, other
key issues showed a majority of
losses running to above a point.
The main body of stocks tried to
follow the steels during the morn
ing but couldn't make a go of it.
The steel company's announce
ment yesterday frankly flabber
gasted most of the financial dis
trict. The news itself was not too
great a surprise although it was
generally agreed that the size of
the special dividend, and the
amount o.' fourth quarter earn
ings, veered on the generous size.
A special and split-up have been
high on Wall Street's rumor list
for months but few anticipated
that steel directors would choose
Tuesday to act.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks declined .2 of one point
to 65.3. the third average decline
in a row. Of the 990 issues which
appeared on the ticker tape, 441
declined and 299 advanced.
Sales increased to 1,040.000
shares, a high since Jan. 7. This
compared with 810,000 Tuesday,
Grains Take
New Tumble
CHICAGO. Jan. 2&-(JP)-G rains
took another tumble on the board
of trade today. Losses ranged to
nearly 2 cents in wheat and oats
while corn, showing a little more
resistance to selling, had losses
extending to more than a cent.
Soybeans and lard fell with grains.
At one time the market showed
some strength. With mills buying
wheat, the bread cereal led a mid
day rally i which carried prices
above the previous close. Once the
mill buying stopped, however, the
market turned around and sank
to new lows on the current de
cline. Wheat " closed 1 to V lower,
corn was IV4 lower to V higher,
oats were 1 to 17a lower, rye was
2 to 2V4 lower, soybeans were Vz-
Vi lower and lard was 12 to 18
cents a hundred pounds lower.
About the only news of en
couragement to bulls came from
the flour trade. Some flour was
sold to the Production and Mar
keting administration and The
Netherlands East Indies overnight.
An eastern chain bought flour in
the southwest.
