Dr. Herman ft.
Bundensea, MLD.
In elderly people there Is often
a slowing down of the circulation.
particularly m the less. This is es
pecially true when varicose veins
are present, that is, veins which
are enlarged or dilated. This slow
ing down of the circulation may
lead to the - development of so
called leg ulcers. These are deep
sores in which ther is loss of
tissue. Because of the circulatory
difficulty, these ulcers do not heal
as they should. Ofte'n they be
come infected.
But medical science is always
advancing, and it is encouraging
to note that recently a methed of
treatment has been described
which seems to give good results
in many instances. It is rapid, and
requires only a short period of
inactivity for the patient.
First Step
The first step taken in the treat
ment is the giving of injections of
scarring substances around the
varicose vein to eliminate them.
Next, the ulcer is cleaned and anti
septics applied, and the. patient
is kept at rest in bed. Then, daily
injections of pencillin into a mus
cle is started. At the same time,
injections of a local anesthetic
are given.
The frequency of the injections
of the local anesthetic depends up
on the extent of the ulcer and th
relief of symptoms obtained. Often,
it Is found necessary to give only
two or three injections at In
tervals of two or three days. If
the ulcers are deep or extensive,
the injections of local anesthetics
are given daily.
It was noted, In several cases
treated, that the ulcer begins to
heal within a few days,1 that the
skin surrounding it regains normal
appearance, and that the pain dis
appears. In the cases mentioned,
the disorder recurred in only two
instances, and these two responded
at once to a second course of
treatment. One patient had an
ulcer which had been treated for
six months by other means, with
no effect. Wit the treatment de
scribed, it cleared up within sev
eral weeks.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
R.K.: What is the treatment for
undulant fever? t; I
Answer: Many cases ar bene-'
fited bythe use of streptomycin,
together with one of the sulfon-j
amide drugs. f
With proper hygiene and plenty!
of rest, the condition, in most
