Here' one record almost lost In the shuffle, end It's a good one:
Viking Harold Hauk says no Astoria basketball team ever has licked
him in the nine seasons be has been coaching In the Villa arena. That
would make 14 straight home wins for Hauk against the Fishermen.
Astoria did hang one loss on the
Salems in town, but not at the
Villa. That loner came in the 1941
state tournament at Willamette,
when Wally Palmberg's Coasters
nipped the Salems for the cham
pionship in ah overtime period...
True, Astoria has licked Salem at
the Villa, but. during the 1943-44-45
seasons when Hauk was in the
navy. The veteran Salem mentor
has a good chance to elaborate on
his record Friday and Saturday as
the Finns of this semester dont
seem to be up to their usual par.
Their record indicates as much. . .
Jim Aiken says he expects to
lose Norm Van Brocklln to the
pros, which will leave the UO
quarterback spot wide open next
autumn. Three possibilities as Van
Brocklin replacements, should he
leave, are De Wayne Johnson, the
Silverton southpaw who playea jjr WAYNE JOHNSON
mostly on defense as a linebackei j
last season; Earl Stelle, the Medford Black Tornado quarterback of
the Al Simpson terrific Tornado teams, and another Johnson, this one
Abe, late of Monmouth's OCE. The latter Johnson, top T man for Bill
McArthur's Wolves in 1948, has transferred to the university. One of
those three, or possibly someone else. At any rate there is nothing for
the UO faithful to fret about, as we can't see Aiken operating without
a substantial quarterback. He's the
gent who has said many times,
" Tis a poor coach who gets caught
without materiaL"

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON,
Jan. 12 -(Special)- Coach John
Warren maneuvered his Oregon
Webfoot basketball team through
another strenuous workout today
in getting ready for the Friday
and Saturday night games in Mc
Arthur court with the surprisingly
strong Idaho Vandals. Idaho held
Oregon to a two-point win last
week at Moscow and then on the
next night spanked the Webfoots
decisively.
Warren has been spending most
of the week sharpening up the
Oregon point-making attack. He
figures the team must be at its
best in order to win both games
and remain in the northern divi
sion pennant race. The Webfoots
now have one win and three losses
and reside in last place In the
standings.
A final drill will be held tomor

CINCINNATI, Jan. 12-P-Baseball Commissioner A. B. Chandler I aWjf 'u LththpUreI?
hune fines on Io rhirnrher FreHHie Fituimmnni nH the New York " apeaa:.
National league club today for violating the tampering rule and
warned that more severe penalties will be inflicted if anyones does
it again.
Jjurocher, manager of the Giants, and Fitzsimmons, last year a
Boston Braves' coach, were fined $500 each for negotiating a 1949
contract while Freddie still was employed by the Beantown club.
Fitzsimmons also was suspended from March 1 to April 1.
The New York club was fined $2,000.
"Clubs and their personnel are warned that future violations of
the tampering rule will be accompanied by more severe penalties
than those imposed in this instance," Chandler said in his finding.
"Coach Fitzsimmons and manager Durocher both professed ignor
ance of the tampering rule. Such ignorance is not excused now and
will not be in the future." !
The rules say a player or coach must have the written consent of
his club before he may negotiate with another outfit.
Chandler said that "except for the fact that Frederick Fitzsimmons
has had long and honorable service in baseball, the commissioner
would deprive the New York club of his services for the 1949 season.
Furthermore, baseball's head man wants the Giants' management
to certify that the fines of Durocher and Fitzsimmons are paid solely
ou of their own funds and that they are not reimbursed "now or
hereafter."
