Whet Appetites
Cheese Begins Highly Flavored
Spreads For Crackers or Potatoes
Br Maxlne Baren
Statesman Woman's Editor
Though the holidays are special eating days, entertaining and eat
ing do not cease when the festivities are over. But whether you choose
a holiday or another time for giving parties, it's nice to start out with
appetizers.
The calavo people offer a new
spread for topping crackers or rye
crist as appetizers. One suggestion
is to combine chili powder, grated
onion and lemon juice with sieved
avocado. Here's the exact recipe:
AVOCADO CHILI SPREAD
1 large avocado
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1V4 teaspoon grated onion
teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
Salt to taste.
Mash the avocado and blend In
other Ingredients. Spread on crack
ers or potato chips.
A cheese ball makes a good im
pression on guests as well as the
family, and no wonder, the flavor's
usually mighty good. There's any
number of variations of course, one
woman says combine a wedge of
Roquefort, a square of Philadel
phia cream and a cube of nippy
cheese, add a dash of Worcester
shire sauce, a little tobasco and
some garlic salt. Roll it in nuts and
serve with crackers or potato chips.
Some of the prepared cheeses
sold in glasses are pretty well sea
soned up for that sort of thing.
Some contain caraway seed, some
bacon, some garlic.
One especially simple but well
flavored appetizer has stuck in my
mind after several years. It was a
specialty 61 one of the hosts at a
party I attended. Over the contents
of a package of those tiny wafer
shaped whole wheat cereals (like
shredded wheat only very small)
he sprinkled a liberal amount of
savory salt( purchased in the con
diment department along with gar
lic salt and others) and melted
butter. That was all.
