Depoe Bay
Project Sought
DEPOE BAY. Ore.. Dec. 28-UP)
This Oregon coastal town is seek
in a federal project to deepen
the bay here, widen the channel
entrance and build a .breakwater.
Army engineers estimate the cost
at $362,250 said J. B. Patterson,
head of a sDonsoring committee.
Patterson said the project is needed
for the 100 fishermen who use the
bay regularly and others who take
refuge here during storms.
It would call for dredging to

low tide, the channel 30 feet wide.
The breakwater would be con

WHY CONSERVATION IS NECESSARY
Winter brings greater use of light and
heating equipment using electricity. It
brings a pick-up in industrial produc
tion which means still more power use.
All this reaches a maximum between
4:30 and 6:30 p.m. when thousands of
housewives start preparing dinner and;
thousands of men and children start
using water (most of it heated elec
trically) to clean up. The result is that
the total power available from all
present Northweit power sources can
barely cope with the demand. A serious
break down can occur unless you help.

Oaom's Flight ?
Plan Termed
'Impossible'
HONOLULU, Dec. 28 -(p Bill
Odom's projected Honolulu to New
York non-stop flight in a light
plane was termed a "physical im
possibility" today by the superin
tendent of safety at the Honolulu
airport.
"But," Superintendent William
S. Holloway added, "if it can be
done Bill Odom has figured out
how to do it."
Odom announced in Wichita
earlier today he would attempt
the 5,010-mile flight sometime
during the first four days in Jan
uary. He wants to break the light
plane non-stop flight record of
2,061 miles set by Russians in
1937.
Holloway said the amount of
fuel required ror such a flight
would weigh more than the 3,500
pound Beech Bonanza which Odom
will fly. Odom said, however, thai

Dividend Due
WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 - UP) -The
veterans administration plans
to start paying a $2,000,000,000 in

Sixteen million war veterans

Veterans who took out the $1,000

top amount- 10,000 will receive
an eight-year accumulation of
several hundred dollars.
It is unlikely that dividend pay
ments will start before next Aug
ust, a spokesman for the agency
