mittee. The board also voted to build a
new obstetrical department in the
hospital consisting of 16 rooms.
The new department will include
two delivery rooms, two nurseries,
three soundproof labor rooms, a
feeding ' and formula room, diet
kitchen and other necessary equip

Fined $200
Robert L. Kroeplin, 2240 N.
Libertv st., was fined $200 and
his driver's license was revoked
for one year in municipal court
Saurday following his arrest earl
ier for driving while intoxicated.
A 60-day sentence was suspended
on payment of fine.
Kroeplin was held in lieu of
$50 bail after pleading innocent
to a charge of contributing to the
delinquency of a minor, Joseph
E. Mapes, 19, 1860 Waller St.,
who was found "passed out" in
Kroeplin's car.
City police nabbed Kroeplin on
North Capitol street early Satur
day morning after he was observ
ed driving his car from curb to
curb.
Mapes was fined $15 on a charge
of being drunk in a motor vehicle. ,
TIERNEY APPOINTED
Appointment of Orvine Tierney,
Condon, as justice of the peace for
the West Condon precinct, was an
nounced Saturday by Gov. John H.
Hall. Tierney succeeds C. O. Port-
wood, who resigned recently-

Building at
Corvaiiis Farm
Expansion of facilities at the
WCTU Children's Farm home near
Corvaiiis will be started soon, C.
L. Starr, Portland, president of the
home's board of trustees announc
ed Saturday.
The building program calls for
construction of a two-story frame
building measuring 35 feet by 66
feet. The first floor will house a
sun room, living room, dining
room, kitchen and matron s quar
ters. The second story will have
five study-bedrooms, other sleep
ing accommodations, sun deck and
housemother's quarters.
A finished basement will include
a playroom, club rooms, locker
rooms, laundry facilities and oil
fired hot water plant. Plans have
been prepared by Herzog & Bar
nes, Portland architects.
Construction was made possible
by a $20,000 gift from Mr. and
Mrs. A. G. Beals of Tillamook, a
$10,000 donation from the Bessie I.
Smith estate of McMinnville and
other funds.
Architects have called for bids
to be submitted by 3 p-m., January
14, and the building will be finish
ed about May 15.
The 285-acre farm is located near
the Albany - Corvaiiis highway,
three miles east of Corvaiiis. It is
sponsored by the Oregon Women's
Christian Temperance union and
is administered by a board of trus
tees of 19 men and women from
all parts of the state.

Uarl Harden
On Probation
For 5 Years
Carl Melvin Harden, 23, charg
ed with shooting his cousin, Clif
ford Harden, following a dispute
at Gates last August 24, was plac
ed on five years' probation Sat
urday by Marion County Circuit
Judge George Duncan.
Judge Duncan handed down
his decision following a pre-sentence
hearing Saturday morning.
He stipulated that Harden must
obey all civil laws, refrain from
drinking and report to the parole
officer regularly.
Changed Plea
Harden; has been confined in
Marion county jail since, the
shooting, on a charge of assault
with a dangerous weapon. He
originally pleaded innocent to the
charge, but changed his plea to
guilty November 13. Originally he
was charged with assault with
intent to kill, but the charge was
reduced.
The army veteran who fought
in the South Pacific was charged
with shooting his cousin with a
Japanese rifle he brought back
from Okinawa. The dispute, wit
nesses said, stemmed from an
altercation over a title to an auto
which the cousin removed from
Harden's wallet at the family
cabin.
Testifies to Fights
Harden, testifying Saturday,
said his cousin had beaten him
several times prior to their fight
and that he was protecting him
self when the shot was fired. He
stated that his cousin advanced
on him and attempted to wrestle
the gun from his hands when
the weapon discharged.
State police testified the youth
made no attempt to resist them
when they arrived on the scene
to make the arrest. Others said
there was only one bullet in the
rifle and only a single shot fired.
Witnesses said both men were
drinking at the time.
Several witnesses verified Har
den's statement that his army rec
ord of four years had been spot
less. Harden told the court he
had been awarded several medals
for outstanding service in combat
and had been discharged in 1947
with a pension for 50 per cent
disability for injuries suffered in
battle.
