Home Demonstration Agent Bulletin Gives Ideas on Sewing, Candymaking By Maxlne Buren Statesman Woman's Editor Country women, especially those who belong to the home extension units, have some advantages which city women do not. They have ac cess to the fund of information which the home extension department compiles each month. Of course this material is free for the asking, but one doesn't al ways think to ask. Today we received a bulletin from the department, which is chock full of valuable material for the housewife. The home demonstration agent suggests that you use your sewing machine, with stitch set at longest length, to speed up basting. Chang ing the length of stitch is good for the machine, rather than bad for it as some women believe, because it allows the machine to wear the parts in different places. A hinged foot, which enables one to sew over pins, is available for many makes of machine. One of the new plastic finishes is suggested for drainboard linno-leum- Wax wears off the surfaces, but the modern plastic finishes will remain a long time to make the linoleum look very shiny. The use of coat hangers to make Christmas wreaths, while not new, is always a good thing to be re minded of. Shape the wire of the hanger to make a circle, placing the hook at the top to use as a hanger for the wreath. Greens should be prepared in J inch lengths. The little bunches of greens are wired onto the circle, beginning at the top, and stems are to be kept all running in one direction. Wire to be used for fastening the greens onto the coat hanger,, should be wound around a small stick, and unwound as needed. If wreaths are to be viewed from both sides, alternate the branches of green. A recipe for taffy apples is giv en in the bulletin: TAFFY APPLES 6 apples Vt cup water 1 cup brown sugar H cup granulated sugar Vt cup light cornsyrup 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon vanilla Mix sugar, syrup and water and cook to a light crack (70 degrees) without stirring. Just before re moving from fire, add butter and vanilla. Put wooden skewers in small firm red apples and whirl in the syrup until apple is com pletely covered- Remove quickly and let cool on a buttered platter.
