Salem Chapter 1, Chin-up Club
of Oregon, will sponsor the club's
annual state Christmas party Sun
day at Four Corners hall east of
Salem, beginning with a 12:30 p.
m. dinner.
The Junior Catholic Daughters
of Sacred Heart academy will give
a . program. Orville Wymore of
Brooks will sing. Zella Lomax is
program chairman and Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Krepla head the host
and hostess committee.
Industry Payrolls
Show Steady Rise
Industrial payrolls in Oregon to
taled $60,342,248 in November, up
slightly from the previous month
and nearly $13,000,000 more than
in November, 1947, the state indus
trial accident .ommission said
Wednesday.
October total was $59,992,251 and
that of November last year was
$47,409,167. Multnomah county
showed $22,093,459 last month, ac
counting for only about $2,000,000
of the state's rise in the year.

Approves $1,500
Budget for Year
A budget of $1,500 for the com
ing year was approved by the
Enelewood Parent-Teacher asso
ciation Tuesday at the Englewood
school-
Furnishing teachers' room in
the new addition of the school
will take $496 of the funds. $500
will assist in financing week day
Bible classes at the Englewood
church; $280 for a baloptican pro
jector, portable phonographs and
two tables for educational purposes
in the school; and $90 for the Boy
and Cub Scouts, Bluebirds and
Camp Fire girls.
The P-TA discussed plans to
sponsor an appearance of the Eu
gene Gleemen in Salem next
spring, and a men's style show
in January.
Englewood's sixth grade chorus
presented a number of Christmas
songs for the 230 members at
tending the meeting. The Rev.
Lloyd Uecker of the Englewood
church talked on the meaning of
Christmas.
Business Loans
Slump Sharply
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15-IP)-A
fourth consecutive week of de
clines in business loans was re
ported tonight by the Federal
Reserve board.
The board said business loans
by Federal Reserve member banks
in the nation's leading cities, drop
ped another $68,000,000 during the
week ended December 8.
That reflected a total fall of
$124,000,000 since the peak of $15,
583,000,000 in business loans was
recorded December 1.

Parking Lot Near
Capitol to Operate
On Monthly Basis
Plans for a new auto parking
lot, to be operated on a monthly
basis principally to accommodate
motorists in the state office build
ing area, were announced Wed
nesday by Lloyd Keene and Wil
liam Coon.
An old house at 151 N. 13th st
is almost completely razed.' The lot.
approximately 120 by 80 feet, will
be filled and graveled. Readiness
date is dependent upon the weath
er, said Keene- A building on the
alley, leased to the state agricul
ture department, will not be dis
turbed. Keene and Coon also own the
adjacent Top Hat restaurant and
ice cream parlor and service station.

Field Worker
While new in Oregon, the Ex
change club is one of the oldest
and largest national service groups,
the Salem chapter was told Wed
nesday by Harry J. Gould, field
worker and director of the nation
al convention. He spoke at the
luncheon in the Senator hotel.
Nominations for 1949 club offi
cers were reported in by a com
mittee headed by Wayne Hadley.
Proposed are Peery T. Buren for
president; Robert Brownell, vice
president; George Martin, secre
tary; Sidney Hoffman, treasurer;
Sidney Boise, Leroy Johnson, Ro
land Mersereau, Charles Pillette
and Marvin Ritchie (three to elect)
for board of control.

Exams Slated
A series of three examinations
for dairy Workers required to have
state licenses has been scheduled
for early jnext week, the division
of foods jand dairies, state agri
cultural I department announced
Wednesday.
Examinations for cheesemakers
will be held Monday and for but
termakers and butter graders on
Tuesday. All examinations will
be held in the dirt building, on
Oregon Stat ' college campus,
Corvallis.
Those intending to take the ex
aminations should notify the state
department of agriculture at once,
officials said.
