Prices Slowly
Gain Ground
NEW YORK, Dec. 11 -OP)- The
Stock market reached the highest
average level of the past three
weeks today.
Gains of fractions to a point
and more lifted some stocks to
the year's top prices. In the two
hour session the market took the
best strides ol the week.
Demand was a carry-over from
rally that started during the
final hour on Friday. After a
hesitant start, buying power
stepped up. Closing prices were
around the highs of the day.
Brokerage quarters saw two
factors at work: Year-end selling
to establish tax losses let up. while
year-end investment and specu
lative Durchases increased.
Wall Street seems pretty well
convinced that its December rally
Is making headway. For the past
two weeks the market has closed
higher than In the preceding week
despite tax selling which at times
achieved sizable proportions.
The general run of prices, of
cour?e, has a long way to go to
get back ta pre-election levels
In late October the market, as
measured by the Associated Press
average of 60 stocks, hit a pre
election high of 71. On November
80 a post-election low of. 62.6 was
established, or a decline during
November of more than $7,500,
000,000 in the market value of all
stocks listed on the exchange.
