INDEPENDENCE Independ
ence property taxes jumped about
Zi per cent this year, it was re
vealed when tax rolls were turn
ed over this week by County As
sessor Ed C. Dunn.
This year's tax is 93.S mills, com
pared with 70.3 mills in 1947 an
Increase of 23 mills. City property
owners will pay a total of $66,083
on an assessed valuation of $708,
235. Of the total $25,710 goes for
support of city government and
$30,314 for schools.
Independence school district tax-
?ayers will pay out on the basis
I 65.3 mills, compared with 51.9
ihills last-year. A tax of 2.2 mills
for the fire protection district is

Dunn explained, that the 23 mill
increase is due entirely to higher

State Conclave
At Mt. Angel ,
MT. ANGEL The state conven
tion of the Catholic Order of Fo
resters will be held in Mt. Angel
Sunday in St. Mary's ciubroom.
Memorial mass for St. Mary's
Court 1293 will be aaid at S a.m.
Sunday with all members, adults
and juveniles, taking communion.
A free breakfast will be served
following mass.
The business session will start
at 11 a.m. with Joseph J. Wavra,
Mt. Angel, state chief forester,
presiding.
New Wood burn
Council Meets
WOODBURN Jess Fikan was
re-elected president of the Wood
burn city council in the first meet
ing of the new city administration
in the recorder's office Tuesday
night.
Mayor Elmer Mattson and coun
cil men Fikan, E. J. Hughes and T.
L. Workman all began their second
terms in the meeting. The only new
councilman was P. L. LaBarr who
replaced M. M. Hicks.
Committees appointed by Mayor
Mattson were Hughes and LaBarr,
water; Workman and Fikan, street,
and Fikan and Hughes, finances.
Committees to be appointed later
are those for ordinance, fire de
partment and property.
