SILVERTON Annual inspection
night at the Veterans of Foreign
Wars auxiliary was held Wednes
day with Mabel Stone, McMinn
ville, president of district No. 21,
in charge.
Plans were made for future
events with Mrs. Frank Porter,
president, naming committees for
the occasions.
A Christmas party is planned
for December 15 as the major i
event of this year. The party will
be for auxiliary members and
their families. Arranging the pro
gram will be Mrs. Olaf Tokstad,
Mrs. L. F. Tucker, and Mrs. H. B.
Madden. Serving on the candy
committee are Mrs. Dallas Bellen
ger and Mrs. Emil Grant, and
planning for gifts are Mrs. Theo
dore Grace, Mrs. Lenna Elliot and
Mathilda Pierce.
The auxiliary homecoming has
been set for January 19. The aux
iliary was instituted in August but
because of the busyness . of that
season homecoming was postpon
ed until the winter.
The auxiliary voted to buy a
Bible for the book-wagon which
Mrs. Porter is presenting the local
hospital as her presidential project
for the year. She conceived the
idea she said, from the veterans
hospital where her husband was
confined for some time.
A bazaar, including fancy work
and candy, will be held at the El
mer Johnson store on Main and
Water street Saturday, November
20, starting at 10 a. m.
Kitchen committee for the De
cember 1 included Mrs . Sarah
Burch, Mrs. Ruth Knies and Mrs.
Grace. November prize went to
Mrs. Herman Naegeli Wednesday
night with a special birthday sur
prise to Mrs. J. P. A. Hanson, one
of the older members of the auxiliary.

Ring Broken
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov, 20 -OF)
Charles A. Dixon, 32, was taken
into custody by the U.S. secret
service Friday after San Francis
co police found a counterfeit mon
ey plant In his downtown apartJ
ment.
Fred C. Wasson, acting super
visor of the secret service, said
Dixon served time in Sing Sing
for grand theft and in the Oregon
state prison for forgery.
Wasson, who inspected the plant.
said it was set up to make $10 and
$20 bills. He said it had complete
photographic and photo-engraving
equipment.
Junior Basketball Is

association has announced junior
basketball would be offered dur
ing the winter months and that
six community organizations have
been asked to sponsor the teams.
These are Rotary and Lions clubs,
chamber of commerce, Junior
chamber of commerce, Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the American

Orders for CARE packages, an
overseas relief organization, will
be accepted from Salem area res
idents at the local Salvation Army
post this week for delivery at
Christinas time, Capt. R. B. Lesh-
er of the Salem post reports.
"Save a hie for Christmas," is
the slogan for CARE friendship
week, November 21 to 27, to be
observed here and over the state.
Capt. Lesher urges individual and
civic groups, churches and schools
to purchase food or clothing pack
ages as Christmas gifts for the
needy in other nations.
CARE guarantees delivery and
packages enter the selected IS na
tions duty and ration free. CARE
makes up the package for the pur
chaser and sends it to the foreign
person intended, Capt. Lesher
pointed out.
The standard package costs $10,
a special turkey dinner package is
priced at $13 and a 10-pound lard
package goes at $5.90. Orders may
be entered in person at the Salem
Salvation army headquarters, 241
State st., from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m.

ignating sender's name and ad

Small Dog's Barking
Saves Lives of 12
ST. THERES, Que., Nov. 20 -(JF)
A small dog was credited with sav
ing the lives of 12 persons sleep
ing in a house which caught fire
last night in this village 20 miles
from Montreal.
Police said the dog's barking
aroused Paul Ithier, the owner,
who was able to waken the 11
others in time to escape. The house
was destroyed.
Mrs. Looney,
82, Native of
Oregon, Dies
ALBANY Funeral services
for Mrs. Fred E. Looney, 82, who
died in a Salem hospital Friday,
will be held at the Christian
church in Jefferson at 1:30 p.m.
Monday, in charge of the Fisher
Funeral home of Albany, with
interment at Belcrest in Salem.
Mrs. Looney, .the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Nancy
Vaughn Miller, was born on the
donation land claim of her par
ents near Jefferson August 19.
1868. As Ida M. Miller she was
married Jan. 4, 1888 to Trod E.
Looney -and had resided the, past
60 years at the Looney ranch,
route 1, Jefferson. She formerly
taught school, and was a long
time member of the Jefferson
Woman's club.
Mrs. Looney attended the old
Jefferson Institute, and was one
of the first students at the Uni
versity of Oregon. ,1
Survivors include a son, i Her
bert, route 1, Jefferson, a grand
daughter, Mrs. Delbert Cox of
Albany; two sisters, Louise Miller
and Mrs. Lydia Hoyt of Jeffer
son, and two great grandchildren,
Jerry and Smithy Cox of Albany.
