Annual Tea
Slated For
Thursday
Highlight of Thursday will be
the annual Harvest Home tea at
the Methodist Old People's Home
on Center street with the inter
ested public invited to call be
tween 2 and 5 o'clock. The Home
is maintained by the women of
the Methodist conference and is
open to other men and women
than Methodists. At present elev
en denominations are represent
ed at the Home. Guests may
bring gifts of canned goods or
staples or donations for the ele
vator fund which was started a
year ago. The fund has progres
sed far enough now, that build
ing of the elevator in the Home
will be started this year, how
ever additional contributions are
needed before its completion.
Mrs. Willard L. Cole will greet
guests at the door. Mrs. Robert
Moulton Gatke will introduce to
the receiving line which will in
clude Mrs. E. O. Welling, presi
dent of the board of managers,
Mrs. Clara Fletcher, matron, and
Mrs. Ruth Fugate.
Presiding al the tea urns will
be Mrs. C. D. Morse, Mrs. Ernest
C. Richards, Mrs. Byron B. Her
rick and Mrs. Frank James. Ser
ving will be Mrs. Virgil Hume,
Mrs. Steve Anderson, Mrs. H. Gor
don Carl and Mrs. Ervin Potter.
Mrs. H. G. Carl is arranging the
table, which will'be centered with
an arrangement of chrysanthe
mums in autumn shades and
matching tapers.
Mrs. M. C. Findley is in charge
of the guest book. Women of the
Leslie Methodist church arranged
the program, which will include
solos by Betty Starr Anderson
and a talk by the Rev. G. Wesley
Turner.
Sunshine Club at
Van Cleave Home
The Sunshine sewing club of
Hazel Green was entertained
Wednesday at the home of Mrs.
Alvin J. Van Cleave with eighteen
members and guests presents. A
buffet supper was served after
which Mrs. Louise Arneson taked
on her recent trip to Norway.
Guests brought garments to make
up a box to send to families there.
Mrs. Ed Zielinski presided at a
business meeting and appointed
the following committees: cheer,
Mrs. Lloyd McDonald, Mrs. C. A.
Zielinski and Mrs. Ralph Gilbert;
publicity, Mrs. Alvin J. Van
Cleave. Mrs. Ralph Gilbert will
entertain the club December 1 at
which time members will bring
work for a Christmas cheer box.

Armistice day was observed by
participating in the patriotic ac
tivities in Salem, then later gath
ering at the Legion home for a 1

Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Holscher
and children, Willis and Kay, left
Tuesday for southern California
to visit Mrs. Holschers mother
who is ill. They plan to be home
November 28.

for her masters degree on religi

She left the school three years
ago to become secretary of the
First Christian church here. Since
that time she: has been active in
the daily vacation Bible school,
teaching in the senior high school
division, and has taught the Wed
nesday night Bible class and has
served as pastor's assistant.

gasbord which will highlight the Festival of Nations Saturday night
at the YMCA and sponsored jointly by the YWCA.
The menu of a smorgasbord can cover almost the whole field 1
of food, but a few of the other
items on this particular menu are
herring salad with sour cream
dressing, baked ham. smoked
salmon, Swdish meatballs, lefsa,
orange rye bread, flat bread, lin
genberries and a wide variety of
fish and cheeses.
A large portion of the food is
being prepared by Mrs. Liudahl
with the help of other Sandinavian
women in Salem. Mss. E. L. Ar
neson is assisting with the buy
ing. The dinner is being served in
the gymnasium of the , YMCA
where approximately 200 can be
seated at a time. Tables deco
rated with fruit, vegetabes and
autumn leaves will be arranged
as the spokes of a wheel. Hub
of the wheel will be space for-, the
floor show which will be pre
sented at intervals while dinner
is being served frorn 5:15 to
7:30 p.m.

The Junior women met Wednes
day night at the home of Mrs. Fred
Crites to complete plans for the
sale which begins at 11 a.m., and
also for the Chemawa 'Christmas
arrangements. Names of the Indian
children will be drawn at the No
vember 24 meeting so that each
club member will know for whom
she is buying the present. Work
was also done on the Christmas
seals sale which the club members
direct. The seals were prepared
for mailing with the work to be
completed this week.
At the November 24 meeting, to
be held at the home of Mrs. James
Ekman, Mrs. Virgil Pettit will
speak on her two-year stay in
France following the war.
Special guests at the Wednesday
