stock market rounded out a rising
week today In the slowest Satur
day session In five years. ,
Only : 190.000 shares changed.

go to work at all and those who

With the foreign news a domi
nant factor in the market. Wall
street followed Its usual policy of
caution and avoided any large
ks1 rommifanents. A number of
financial observers believe tlu
some sort of compromise on the
Berlin blockade might be worked
out over the week end but until
that happens no one seemed anxi
ous to take an aggressive stana in
the market.
The figures tell the story of Just
how inconclusive the market was
today. Not only was the Asso
ciated Press average of 60 stocks
unchanged at 68 J, but all compo
nents of tbn Index (which include
the industrial, railroad and utility
groups of stocks) were unchanged.
Only 570 issues were traded. ! Of
these 183 advanced and 186 de
clined.
Meeting to Plan

A meeting to crganue the
CROP program for Marion coun
ty will be held Wednesday noon
at the Woodburn cafe. Wood
burn, announces the Rev. M. G.
Blickenstaff, state director. Rep
resentatives of supporting agen
cies, the Oregon Council of
Churches, the Catholic church and
the Lutheran church, as well as
of farm agencies, will attend to
et up an organization.
CROP Is soliciting contribu
tions of farm produce and money
to purchase produce for shipment
to lands where food is needed to
avert starvation.

outside the Missouri Pacific rail
way station.
When he returned a few min
utes later they had been stolen
Police hunted futiiely for the
hardware.
That was In 1912.
Today workmen tore down
part of the station. In a crevice
under the eaves was the cutlery
all 108 pieces. Intact and in good
condition with the exception, of
one razor.
The only dog that is naturally
tailless is the Schlpperke Poodle.

passed ! the 10,000 mark for the
first time, a report released by
County; Clerk, Robert S. Collins to
day reveals.
An energetic drive by young
democrats and the democratic
county committee is believed re
sponsible for the record breaking
total of 10,301 registrants for the
November election. Democrats
edged the republicans 5,139 to
4,991, With Independents, socialists,
prohibitionists and miscellaneous
accounting for the remainder.
Highest previous registration
recorded for the county was 1946 s

Chin-Up Club
To Open Store
Oregon's Chin-up club has
leased the building at 1270 N.
Church st, to establish a state
store, Beth Sellwood, president of
the club, announced Saturday
night.
The store will sell merchandise
made by the handicapped people
of the state and will carry a light
stock of groceries.
Miss Sellwood said that the club
needs an oil circulator, a candy
show case, two plain show cases,
shelving boards, a sink, pipe, an
adding machine and cash register.
Date for opening of the store
will be announced later.

Duck Pinners
In New Home
It was a grand opening time last
night at the new duck pin plant
which has been constructed on
Portland road by Tom Wood.
The 12-lane setup is completely
equipped with the latest in duck
pin installations and equipment
and is rated among the most mod
ern in the northwest.
Wood announces that the league
season will begin shortly, with a
record number of loops expected
to throw at the pins this season.

British Columbia secession move
ment will come before the CIO
International Woodworkers of
America convention opening here

president, said the convention
would act upon the British Colum
bia district council's move in leav
ing the IWA for an independent
Canadian union. Fadling 'already
started court action to freeze the
district council funds.

Association to
Meet Tuesday
Election of officers, committee
reports and consideration of a
pamphlet outlining proposed plans
will feature the annual meeting of
Salem Memorial Auditorium asso
ciation Tuesday at 8 pjn. in the
chamber of commerce.
The open meeting was postpon
ed from September. Action is ex
pected on the building committee's
recommendations, as depicted in
the brochure, and on the location
committee's proposal that the audi
torium be constructed in Bush Pas
ture park. For the latter a ordi
nance bill has been prepared, with
the association to decide whether
it will be submitted to the city
council.
The brochure prepared by the I
association presents the suggestions
of the building committee an art
ist's conception of the building,
general specifications, a possible
floor plan, comparison with other
cities' auditoriums and proposed
financing procedures.

CALCUTTA, India, Oct 9 -(JP)
Forty thousand Assamese tribes
men are facing a near famine by
an invasion of wild rats.
The rodents are destroying
standing crops and overrunning
granaries in the area along the
northwestern border of Burma.
The invasion was caused by
the flowering of bamboo trees,
which occurs every 25 years. The
flowers are a delicacy for rats..
Black diamond is the popular
name of a dark mass of impure
diamond whose technical name is
carbonate.

LAKEVIEW, Oct 9 -iJP- -Two
Florence hunters R. F. Bowman
and Russ Kimble were reported
missing today somewhere between
their coastal home and the Warner
valley country here.
Bowman s son, 19-year-old Don
Bowman, said his father and Kim
ble left Florence in a red truck
yesterday morning to hunt deer
near here. They failed to appear
at a breakfast rendezvous at Oak-
ridge, Ore.
Meantime in central Oregon, two
hunters turned up safely and ex
pressed surprise they had been
thought missing. The two John
Blomquist, 46, Springfield, and his
17-year-old son, Jimmy, said they
hadn't been lost; just tracking
deer.
