Albany Youths
Face Charges
For Car Theft
Two Albany youths, charged
with the theft of an automobile
near Turner last month, are slated
to appear in Stayton Justice court
today.
The pair, 14 and 15 years old,
were arrested Monday by a Mar
ion county sheriffs deputy. The
car belonged to Louis Schofield,
Turner route 1 and was taken from
his farm home on the night of
August 22, according to Deputy
Sheriff William DeVall, who in
vestigated.
Five wheels from the car were
found on Cloverdale school
grounds by deputies on September
3 and later the body of the 1937
Chevrolet sedan was found on i
little-used side road near Turner
In a statement made to deputies
Monday the two said they took the
car and later stripped it accord
ing to DeVall. They are charged
with lqrceny and are being held in
Marion county jail in lieu of $500
bail each.

Mechanical Difficulties

Mechanical difficulties caused
the air force's huge B-38 bomber to
pass up a Salem appearance Sat
urday, Air Force day. The States
man was notified Monday by the
commanding officer of the Sev
enth heavy bombardment wing at
Fort Worth, Texas. i
The message said completion of
the scheduled route was impost
sihie, but that the plane might fly
over at a later date. The giant
bomber went over the Salem are
ahead of schedule Saturday but at
an altitude too high to be notice
able.

teachers in north Marion county
will meet Saturday morning at
Woodburn high school auditorium
to receive and discuss instructions
on the coming school year pro
gram. Conducted by Mrs. Vivian Hoe
nig and Mrs. Marguerite Burton,
rural school supervisors in the
county school superintendent's of
, fice, the conference wiir start at
I 9:30 a. m. and end by noon.
Attending teachers will be from
county zones 1 and 4. Teachers of
zones 2, 3 and 5 will meet at a la
ter date, Mrs. Hoenig stated.
Such "mechanics of school op
eration" as beginners' age, report
! cards, monthly reports, attendance
and truancy problems and passing
t grades will be discussed. School
health problems also are to be
talked over.
Districts in zone 1 include Don-
' aid, Butteville, Aurora, White. St. I
Paul, Pioneer, Hubbard, St Louis,
Gervais, FJdridge, Broadacres and
parkersville.
i Zone 4 is made of Brush Creek,
Union; McKee, Monitor (Harmony
and Monte Cristo), Mt Angel, Be
thany, Evergreen, Union Hill, Sil
ver Crets, Crooked Finger, Scotts
Mills, Marquam, Glad Tidings and
Evans Valley districts.

set up Monday noon at a meeting
of the steering committee with Al
fred Loucks, campaign chairman.
Kickoff breakfast, for all work
ers and solicitors, will be at 7:30
a. m., Tuesday, October 5, at the
Marion hotel. Report luncheons
will be at noon on October 6, 7,
8, 11. 12 and 13, in the Marion,
but will not be held in conjunc
tion with service clubs as in past
years.
The Salem Chamber of Com
merce luncheon program on the
day previous to the campaign's
opening, October 4, will bo pre
sented by leaders of the Chest
drive.
Salem Y Men's Club to
Host Visiting Croup
Officials of Salem YMCA, Y's
Men from Portland and Longview
clubs and young Y members from
over Oregon will be guests of Sa
lem Y's Men's club Thursday at a
6:30 p. m. dinner in the YM. Cyril
Henshaw of Australia will be
speaker for the ladies' night pro
gram. Music and entertainment are
also planned by the committee.
Henshaw will be introduced by
Ronald Hudkins, Salem delegate to
the recent international Y's Men's

Resignation of Maude Durfee as
secretary of First Christian church,
a position she has held for more
than 2Vt years, was announced
Monday. No successor has yet been
named. Mrs. Glen Utterback is
filling the position temporarily.
Miss Durfee plans to remain in
Salem until the first of the year,
when she will return to seminary
to complete work for her master's
degree in Christian education.
While here she has aided with
young people's and church school
work and has directed sessions of
vacation Bible school.
