Parade, Baseball Game Close
Tenth Annual Flax Festival
MT. ANGEL, Aug. 23 Silverton Red Sox defeated Mt. Angel
4 to 1 in the baseball game Sunday afternoon on Ebner field to mark
the official closing of the tenth annual Oregon Flax festival which
opened here Friday night with the crowning of Queen Mary Jane
Qeelan of St Paul.
Preceding the ball game the annual Kiddies parade was held

made up of the Joseph Berchtold
children and Anthony II g.
Joseph Berchtold, who was
master of ceremonies during the
festival, introduced from the re
viewing stand Sunday afternoon.
Rex Putnam, state superintendent
of schools, and Mrs. Putnam; the
Rev. Matthew Butsch, representa
tive of St. Benedict's abbey; the
Rev. Damian Jentges; Eddie Ah-
rens of the Marion County fair
board; Mayor Jacob Berchtold,
Clem J. Butsch and Louis Schwab,
chairman of the sports committee.
He also introduced tile personnel
of the US. army and UJ5. air
force recruiting service, who have
assisted during the festival with
their public address system.
Serving on the Kiddies parade
committee were Leonard Fisher,
Andrew Schmidt, John Jennings,
Clem Hauth and Michael Welton.

Gates Man Given
2-Year Sentence
On Check Charge
Keith Morris Pratt, Gates,
pleaded . guilty to a charge of
forgery Monday and was . sen
tenced to two years in Oregon
state prison by Marion County
Circuit Judge George Duncan. - -
Pratt was also bound over to
the . Marion county grand jury
Monday on a charge of obtaining
money by false pretenses. He ap
peared : in Marion county district
court . and waived preliminary
examination to the charge which
alleges he passed a bad $125
check in Salem last -month.
Pratt was removed to the state
prison Monday. He was arrested
August 18 on a charge of forging
a $49 check of the Kuckenberg
Construction company.

in the Independence area is con
tinuing with the late varieties not
expected until early in September.
Hop picker needs were .described
as "not critical" Monday but the
demand Is expected to increase
when the harvest gets in full
swing.
