In quantity, as well as in qual
ity in some pases, the third week
of The Oregon Statesman's photo
contest for amateurs, brought out
the best representation thus far
of the work of this area's protog
raDhers. .
In . fact, there was no joking
whatever in last Thursday's story
which said the judges were hav
ing a difficult time making their
choices. There were many pic
tures very close to the quality of
those produced on this page, and
the judges still could not be sure
their decisions were correct even
after making them.
Taker Unidentified
One fine picture of a barefoot
boy fishing from a dead limb
would have taken an award had it
been possible to identify the per
son taking it The name did not
appear in the information on the
bark of the photo.
Greatest hindrance in prize
winning quality continued to be
fuzziness lack of a sharp focal
point lending itself to good repro
duction. One or two photos on this
p,Tp were almost counted out be
cause of that factor. Lack of a
contrasting background also elimi
nated some from the running.
The final week of the competi
tion now is underway with the
deadline at midnights Wednesday,
August 4. Winners in the final
week's contest will appear in The
Statesman next Sunday, August 8.
Announcement of the grand prize
winners, and the oicturps them
selves, will be published Sunday,
August 15. A grand prize is to be
awarded the top picture in each
of the four classifications.

Checks Already Mailed
Checks for $60 were mailed Sat
urday to the week's 12 winners.
Already there have been expres
sions of regret that the contest is
limited to four weeks. Reason for
such a limit lies in two major
factors first, when the contest
was launched it was not known
how much interest would be
shown, or whether such interest
would be sustained: second, even
though such interest has exceeded
all expectations it would hardly
be fair for contestants for grand
prizes to be opposed by entrants
In other than the four weekly con
tests originally announced.
But those factors do not bar an
other such contest at a future
time. In the meantime, any sug
gestions for changes in the rules
and regulations Would be given
careful consideration.
Specifications Reprinted
The initial - contest thus far as
developed very few "bugs," and
with continuing fine cooperation
another one might be even more
successful, if that is possible.

night every amateur in the area
has an equal chance to figure in
the final week's prizes or those
offered for the four finest pictures
In-the entire competition.

Clan Meeting Held
In Falls City Park
TURNER Smith - Chamberlain
elan held its annual reunion in
the Falls City park Sunday, July
S3, with 60 present. James Smith
and his family of 13 children came
to the Lewisville area in Polk
county in 1848. Maria Smith,
fourth child, married John Cham
berlain and selected their donation
land claim on the Little Luckia
muto river, nine miles south of
Dallas. The clan is made up of the
descendants of "Grandma Maria"
Smith, but Aunt ; Maria Smith
Chamberlain to her friends and
Eeighbors in the years immediate
r following the date of Oregon
Statehood in 1859.
