Club Women to Gather .

Largest gathering of club women ever to assemble in Oregon at one time will
be in Portland on May 24 for the opening of the 57th annual convention of the
General Federation oi Women's clubs at the municipal auditorium. Several thous
and women are expected to arrive from every state in the union and its territor
ies. General headquarters for the convention are at the Heathman hotel with Jun
ior headquarters at the Benson hotel. The convention theme is "Mobilizing for
Peace."
The Statesman will carry on-the-spot reports from the convention.
Presiding at the sessions to be held daily from May 24 to 29 will be Mrs. J. L.
Blair Buck, Washington, D. C, president, Mrs. Hiram C. Houghton, Red Oak, Iowa,
first vice-president; and Mrs. Oscar A. Ahlgren, Whiting, Indiana, second vice
president. Largest social event of the convention will be held the opening night Monday,
May 24, with an Oregon dinner at 7 o'clock irr the Shrine ballroom of the Masonic
temple. Mrs. William B. Chandlee, the state president, will give the greetings;
Governor John H. Hall, the welcome to Oregon, Mayor Earl Riley of Portland, the
welcome to Portland and the response will be by Mrs. J. L. Blair Buck, president
of the General Federation. The Indian theme is being used in the decorations and
program for the dinner. Vocal selections will be given by Josephine Albert Spaul
ding, mezzo-soprano, with Mrs. Alfred A. Schramm, both of Salem, the accom
panist. The Pendleton Women's club will present the program "The New Look in
the Long Ago," assisted by the Oregon Trails Women's club from the Umatilla
Indian reservation. Following the dinner a reception will honor Mrs. Buck at the
Portland Art Museum.
Salem Women Active
Salem women are playing an important role in assisting with arrangements
for the convention. The Salem Woman's club has wrapped myrtlewood candle
sticks to be given as favors to the New York delegation attending the convention.
The boxes are tied with red ribbon and a red New Yorker rose. Mrs. Walter Spaul
ding has headed the committee in charge of the favors. The Salem Woman's club
was also asked to take charge of decorations for the New England conference din
ner to be held on May 26 at the Portland Women's club, to which over 200 will at
tend. Large red paper cherries will center the tables with candles and a minia
ture of Oregon's capitol building made of flowers will center the speaker's table.
Regional dinners, representing the women's clubs of the entire nation, will beheld
the same night at different places.
One of the larger social affairs for the Juniors during convention will be the
reception on Sunday night. May 23 at the Benson hotel for all Junior club women
with the Oregon Juniors as hostesses. Junior sessions will be held in the morning
and alternoon of May 24 at the Benson hotel and Junior night will be on May
27 at the auditorium.
Other Salem women who will be represented at the convention are four state
chairmen. Mrs. George Ros.-man, fine arts; Mrs. Charles A. Ratcliff, international
relations; Miss Eleanor Stephens, library .science; and Mrs. George Ailing, liter
ature. There will also be many others from Salem besides those pictured or
mentioned above who plan to attend part of the sessions, luncheons or dinners.

Teachers Dinner Slated . . . .
Annual friendship dinner of the Salem Teachert association will be held Friday night at
the Calvary Baptist church at 6:30 o'clock. Retiring teachers, who will be honor guests, include
Mrs. Bertha Gamer, Grant, Miss Mabel P. Robertson, dean of girls, Salem high school, and
Mrs. Elma McAllister, Parrish Junior high school.
Miss Lorraine Meusey, president of the association, will be the toastmistress.

All husbands and wives of faculty members, principals, supervisors and special teachers

Verne Scott to Wed Easterner ... j
From the east comes romantic news telling of the engagement and forthcom-;
ing marriage of Miss Dorothy Jane Forshee, eldest daughter of Mrs. Jane For-1
shee of Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Verne H. Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. j
Scott of Salem.
The wedding date has been set for June 23 and will take place at the First
Methodist church in Ann Arbor, of which the bride-elect is a member. ' J
Miss Forshee is a graduate of Ann Arbor schools and attended the Chicago
Art Institute and is now in the art department of the engineering department off
Ford Motor company. j
Mr. Scott graduated from Salem high school, attended Willamette university!
and while in the Navy V-12 unit at Willamette was transferred, to the Uruve ty
of Michigan at Ann Arbor, from which he graduated in civil engineering at Jim
completion of his V-12 training. He was employed by the University of Califor
nia then returned to the University fo Michigan to study for his master's degree.

Mrs. Scott will lly east in early June to attend her son's graduation and wed-i
ding and will be accompanied by Mrs. R. W. Land. Mr. Scott will leave later;

Final Meeting, Installation
Final meeting of the season for members of the Salem Woman's club will b
held Saturday, May 22 at the clubhouse with a salad luncheon at one o'clock.
Mrs. Albert Gragg heads the directorate for the affair. A trio, composed of Mrs.!
J. Bothwell Avison, Mrs. Ralph Coie and Mrs. David Cameron, will sing. j
Mrs. Estill Brunk, the retiring president, will preside and give her annual re-l
port as will her officers, committee and department chairmen. Installation of of
ficers will take place with Mrs. Robert Hutcheon the installing officer, Mrs. Guy
Hickok will be installed as the new president. An executive board meeting will
precede the luncheon meeting at 12 o'clock.

Together 25 Years .
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Berwick will be honored on their
silver wedding anniversary this afternoon at an open house
for which their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rol
lin Haag, and son, Douglas Berwick, will be hosts at the
Berwick home on South 23rd street. Their friends have been
invited to call between 3 and 6 o'clock.
Receiving with the hosts and honor guests will be Mrs.
Berwick's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil
Clark of Portland, who were best man and honor attendant
at their wedding 25 years ago. Mrs. Berwick will wear an
aqua crepe ankle length gown with corsage of Cecile Brun
ner roses and baby pink orchids for the occasion. Mrs. Clark
will be gowned in a silk print with corsage of Cecile Brun
ner roses and sweet peas. During the afternoon Gladys
Mclntyre Thomas will sing "Because" and "At Dawning,"
with Miss Minnie Miller the accompanist, who also sang
and played the same pieces at the wedding.
Mrs. E. A. Perrin will greet the guests at the door. Pre
siding at the urns during the afternoon will b Mrs. Ber
wick's sisters, Mrs. Sam Tyler of Eugene, Mrs. James Lu
cas, Mrs. Miles Edwards and Mrs. Myrtle Ross. Assisting
will be Mm. A. F. Beardsley of Albany and Mrs. Harold
Lattin. The table will be covered with a pink satin cloth
with pink nosegays of roses and bouvardia flanking the sil
ver candelabras holding pink tapers.
Bridal Plans Told .
Salem Junior Women's club members have made all place cards for the Oregon dinnery

Miss Lenore Headley and Robert Edgar Gangware have
completed plans for their wedding on Saturday, May 29,
which, will take place at the First Congregational church at
10 o'clock. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Grant Clarence Headley of Portland and will be given in
marriage by her father. The future benedict is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Gangware of Sandusky, Ohio.
The Rev. Seth Huntington will perform the morning
nuptials and Mrs. Lester Cour will sing. Jean Hobson Rich
will be the organist.
Mrs. James Bunnell will be the matron of honor and
Mrs. Orval Walling of Bickleton, Wash., niece of the bride,
will b the bridesmaid. Wendell Webb will stand with the
groom as best man and seating the guests will be Lester
Cour, Eric Bergman, Ralph Wagers and Donald DHL
The couple win greet their guests In the foyer of the
church after the ceremony. A wedding breakfast for mem
bers of the immediate family and bridal party will be held
In the Flamingo room at Winona's Chalet. After a short stay
at the coast the couple will return to Salem and on June
11 will fly to Sandusky, Ohio, for a fortnight's visit with
his parents.
June Wedding Dates Selected . . .
Two more brides-elect have set their June wedding dates, which means the traditional month of
June continues to be the popular month for ceremonies. - - ' I
At nuptials to be performed in Albany, New York on June 14, Miss Stella McKay, formerly of Sa
lem, and daughter of Mrs. Stanley McKay of Salem, will become the bride of . Edward J. Leahy, son
of Mr. and Mrs. John Leahy of Cohoes, New York. 1
Mrs. McKay will entrain on the City of Portland oa May 27 for New York to attend her daugh
ter's wedding. She win be joined in the east by another daughter, Connie, who has been in San Fran
Cisco. She will be her sister's honor maid and is now enroute to New York. Mrs. McKay, will visit in
Milwaukie and other eastern points before returning west the end of June. f 1 .
Mr. Leahy will receive his degree in engineering from St Bernardine of: Sienna college, Louden
ville, N. Y, in June. Miss McKay is employed with the state education department In Albany.

To Wed in Illinois
- Miss Rose Marie Essley and Robert Burger of Jennings Lodge will be married on June 19 at a
ceremony in New Boston, Illinois, at the home of the bride-elect's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C Essley.
The benedict-elect is the son of Mrs. Nellie Burger of Jennings Lodge. I
The 430 o'clock rites will be followed by reception. Miss Joan Essley will go to Illinois from
Los Angeles to be her sister's only attendant. Richard Burger of Corvallis will be his brother's best
