months.
Closing of Chrysler plants in
the first big automotive strike in
more than two years kept auto
mobile shares in lower ground.
But selected rails and other In
dustrials provided leadership for
the late rally. Earlier, trends
were irregularly lower.
A total of 500,000 shares chang
ed hands in the last 60 minutes to
bring transactions for the day to
1,530,000 shares, somewhat under
Tuesday's 1.750,000.
The Associated Press 60-stock
composite, with a gain of .2 of
a point, punched its way through
last July's peak to stand at 68.7,
its best level since Feb. 11, 1947.
Industrial, rail and utility aver
ages all established new 1948
highs.

covering in corn, particularly the
May contract sent grain prices
higher today.
The market opened mixed.
Small gains were rung up by corn
and oats. New crop wheat con
tracts were fractionally lower.
From opening levels. prices
marched ahead almost steadily.
Final prices were at or only
slightly under the day's best with
May corn experiencing a spectac
ular upturn of 3 cents in the
last five minutes.
