O'BRIEII WSOA UNSUZT r X 1 1 JL By Lillle L, Madaen I almost fear to speak of a gar den event that Is coming:. Last week I told about the American Rhododendron show to be held In Portland this week-end. Then mid-week comes word that "be cause of the weather the show was postponed until May 21, 22 and 23, with the same program as outlined before. Tickets which had been purchased will be hon ored on the new dates. And here's hoping But once again. 111 chance it: Starting today. May 9, will be Li lac week (which, by the way, was originally set to open May 2). And here In the northwest Lilac week means a pilgrimage to Woodland, Wash., to view the lilacs of Mrs. Hulda Klager. This year, the event honors not only the frag rant, colorful blooms in the Mr. dens of Mrs. Klager but the 83rd Dinnaay anniversary of the lady herself. Beginning with a aimnla T.ilar- day, when the Woodland public was Invited to see the Klager gar dens, the event haa Insistence of enthusiastic visitors to a full-scale celebration spon sored by the Young Men's club of Woodland and with visitors mm. lng from the entire northwest. l ne gardens, which Include over 200 varieties of lilacs hybridized by Mrs. Klaeer. ere also a won derland of all flower shrubs -- magnolia, camellia, rhododendron and peonies as well as the smaller blooms, including primroses. Mrs. Klager has been hybridiz ing trees and Dlants for ovr 40 years, being inspired by an early reacung or a book: on the work of Luther Burbank. Lilacs from Mrs Kl A Oct m 0ar- dens have traveled to homes all over the nation and to Canada, in addition to several foreign coun tries. I ney are planted in the Ar nold Arboretum In Rnstnn nH over 40 plants bloom each year on tne grounds of Washington state's capital in Olympia. Most of the varieties are namH fnr friends, relatives or neighboring cities. I shall never forest mv firt Visit to the Klaffr crarHn Tt happened to be shortly after noon ana ine nousekeeper who met me at the door informed me that Mrs. Klager was brina: down rctintr and could not see me at that time. But Mrs. Klager thoueht other wise, and called out, "You come In here. Anvone who winti tn my lilacs, I want to see. I am never that tired. So out into the sardens we went, the day was perfect and so were the lilacs, and so, definite ly, was also Mrs. Klager. whou sense of humor carried her over the painstaking years of work be- iore new strains were finally de veloped. Sometimes they were not worth keeping, she admitted. But when there proved some that were new and worthwhile "Well," said Mrs. Klatzer. as she soread out her hands, palms up, in an expression that told all it meant to her. If you have never visited the Klager gardens, try to do so this spring. The scent, the color and Mrs. Klager herself, will inspire you to goZhome and do something to your own garden, in spite of the weather. Garden Calendar May 9-16 Annual Lilac week in Woodland, Wash. Dates don't seem to mean a thing this season, so be sure the weather is settled before setting out the begonias. If they have been planted correctly In a clay container, don't move them. Simply sink the pot in the garden where the sun may shine on them up to 10 or 11 a. m., but no later. They should have shade through the heat of mid-day and af: noon. U. D. writes that foliage on her lily-of-the-valley shrub (Andro meda) shows dead tips with prac tically all the new growth dis eased. Ans.: I don't believe this is dis ease. The late frost harmed the new growth on many of the shrubs and even caught some of the more tender lilacs. County Refused Right to Limit Cattle Testing Without the necessary petitions, Marion county court cannot cre ate an exception to its recent or der extending the county's Bang's disease testing program to include beef as well as dairy cattle. The court last week declared it would extend the testing to in clude an additional 7,000 to 8,000 beef cattle. Dairy cattle in this county are already Included in a testing program. To its general order of includ ing beef cattle, however, the court arbitrarily exempted a remove re gion of the Abiqua basin. At a re cent meeting of cattlemen, a beef owner In that area protested that testing his herds would prove an enormous task. M. D. Knickerbocker, chief of the division of animal industry of the state department of agricul ture, informed the court Satur day that it could not make an ex ception of a certain area within the county unless a majority of the county cattle owners petitioned for it. "I doubt," said Knickerbocker, "if it would be possible for any one to accomplish the task in this natures. . - n Knickerbocker also indicated that the court could accomplish the same goal by referring to that clause of the testing law which "exempts beef cattle on range or which cannot be gathered for test ins: except at unreasonable ex pense to the owner."
