iness conditions, due to the de
mand for virtually all lines of
commodities and materials, was
predicted by speakers at the na
tional convention of state super
intendents of banks in Washing
ton. D C. last week. A. A. Rog
ers, t the head of the Oregon
state banking division, reported
on his return Monday.
Rogers declared that while there
has been some tightening up of
credit in certain financial fields
total loans for the first three
months of 1948 compare favor
ably with those for the corres
ponding period a year ago. Of
most concern to financial inter
ests, Rogers said, are strikes which
have slowed down and curtailed
production.
Rogers said virtually every state
in the union was represented. A
bumper 1948 tourist crop was pre
dicted by all delegates, he added.
Guard Recruit
Contest Slated
Plans for the Oregon national
guard recruiting contest opening
May 1 and concluding June 25
were announced Monday by Adi
jutant General Thomas E. Rilea
Participants will be both the
air and ground units of the guard
with awards given the unit show
ing the greatest net gain in re
emits during the period and the
enlisted man recruiting the larg
est number.
The winning unit will receive
an article of furniture or recre
ational equipment, not to exceed
$300 in cost, while the top enlist
ed man in the recruiting campaign
will receive a round trip to San
Francisco.
Presentation of awards will be
made during the summer field
camp June 15 to 29. Ground un
its of the guard will train at Camp
Clatsop and air units at Portland
