MRS. OWENS DIES
Last rites were held in Cottage
Grove Thursday for Mrs. Nellie
S. Owens, 83. mother of William
Owens of Salem, who had died
at a daughter's home in Cottage
Grove this week. She was a na
tive of Kentucky and a former
resident of Hillsboro.

Totals 1,130
Willamette university's regis
tration was all but completed
yesterday with a total of 1,130
students registered for the spring
term, Harold B. Jory, registrar,
reported. Only unexpected arriv
als of students and the dropping
of others will change the present
figure.
Of the 1.130 students, 657 reg
istered as. lower classmen (fresh
men and sophomores) and 376 as
upper classmen. In the liberal
arts college. The law school sign
ed 102 students, the music school
76. Eighteen other students, 11
of them taking special music
courses and seven taking special
courses, completed the registra
tion roll.
This spring's enrollment was
approximately 100 less than last
fall's high of 1,235. Drops and
graduation accounted for most of
the difference despite the addi
tion of 50 new students or trans
fers and those on returnee status.
Louise Cutler, campus veterans
advisor, announced that the veter
an enrollment had taken a corre
sponding drop from last fall's 870
to 520 this week. Of the 520 vet
erans enrolled for the spring term
15 are women.
