Win in Contests
KEIZER Four radios were
earned by pupils in a recent mag
azine subscription drive. Teachers
of the rooms are Mrs. Nellie Yung,
Mrs. Myner. Mrs. lone Macnamara
and Mrs. Pearl Langeland. Prizes
for the school will be selected
by the principal, Ralph Nelson.
Basketball court has been paint
ed on the gymnasium floor and
win be ready for use next week.
It was moved to a new location
last fall to make way for a new
building.

Taylor arrived in Oregon St.
Valentine's Day 1888 Just 60 years
ago, February 14. He came to
Amity 20 years later as sgent of
the Southern Pacific Co. and will
have lived in Amity 40 years

UNION HILL Proposed erec
tion of $$55,000 school house for
recently consolidated school dis
trict 42-C will be voted on at a
special school district meeting at
Union Hill grange hall Wednesday,
February 18, at S pjn.
Other issues up for vote at that
time are these proposals:
Purchase of a four-acre school
site southwest of Victor Point
school on J. O. Darby farm prop
erty; authority for the district
board to issue general fund war
rants for $800 to purchase the
site; authority for district board
to issue general fund warrants not
to exceed $300 for drilling a well
on the school site.
SILVER TON The Rev. R. W.
Fedje, district superintendent of
the Methodist churches, will be
guest speaker Friday night at the
February meeting of the local
Builders class. Mrs. B. M. Billings
and Mrs. Robert Edgertoa will
sing a group of duets for the musi
cal program.
A no-host dinner at 830 win
precede the program with Mr. and
Mrs. E. R. Adams and Mr. and
Mrs. H. Holstrom as the recep
tion committee. Arranging the
program are Mr. and Mrs. F. E.
Sylvester and Mr. and Mrs. B. M.

Middle Grove Meeting
EAST SALEM Scout troop
42 sponsored by the Middle Grove
Community club held annual
open house Monday night at Mid
dle Grove school for parents and
friends. Guards presented the na
tional and troop colors.
Following the introduction of
those present. John Van Lannen
Introduced Claude Graham, chair
man of the organization commit
tee of the Cherry City district of
the Cascade council. Two new
scouts, Lewis Patterson, jr. and
Deam Way, were received into
the troop.
Emory Goode, representing the
community cfub in the absence
of Mrs. William Kaufman, club
president, presented the troop
with its charter for the coming
year. The troop has been or
ganized seven years.
Scout certificates of registra
tion were presented by Graham
to Robert PickerelL scoutmaster,
and Gordon Wyatt, assistant
scoutmaster; John Van Lannen,
Institutional representative, and
committeeman, Robert Wagers.
Committeemen were Ted Kuenzi,
William Kleen, Cleo Kenpinger,
Jack Wikoff and Lewis Patter
son. Registration certificates were
presented to the scouts by their
scoutmaster and assistant scout
master. At the court of honor
which followed, Jimmy Kuenzi,
Wayne Goode and Donald Bassett
received the dairying merit badge
nd Jack Wikoff. Jr. merit badges
lor dairying, hog and poultry pro
duction, community farming and
carpentry.

charge of the service.

Mo., he and his wife lived in the
midwest until 1932 wheat they
moved to Oregon. They had lived
here about seven years.

Jane; six sons, E. L. DeWitt, J. B.
.DeWitt and J. M. DeWltt. all of
Dallas. C. J. DeWitt of Bend, F.
P. DeWitt of Redmond and L. C.
DeWitt, Olympia, Wash.; 10
grandchildren and four great
grandchildren.

Mennonite Brethren church for
Mrs. Anna Nickel, "who died at the
Old People's home here last Sun
day. The Rev. G. H. Jantzen will

She was born August If, 1888,
In south Russia, the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Funk. She
married Frank Harder who pre
ceded her in death and later mar
ried Cornelius J.- Nickel at Mun
ich, N.D., ia 1800. He died in rtlft.
At the age of 16. Mrs. Nickel came
to the United States and settled
in Minnesota. She moved 4a North
Dakota in 1899 and caaae la Ore
gon in 1S23. She was a member
of the Mennonite Brethren church.
She leaves five daughters, Mrs.
Lillian McGregor, - Mrs. Anna
Wiens, both of Portland; Susan
and Hilda Harder, both of Pitts
burgh, Pa., and Mrs. Helon Unger
of Scappcose; a son, Henry Nickel,
Grexham, and a brother, Henry
Funk.
