Grains Finish
Well Above
Last Closing
CHICAGO, Jan. 20 -(if)-Grain
futures withstood profit cashing;
toward the close of today's ses
sion at the board of trade and fin
ised Well above yesterday's closing
levels.
Wheat led the advance after a
nervous start on reports that the
government was in the cash wheat
market. The commodity credit
corporation announced it had pur
chafed 1.983,700 bushels of wheat
from noon Friday to the close of
business Monday, and had re
maiaed in the market today.
Toward the close profit cashing
entered the pits but it was well
absorbed, especially by corn. At
the 'finish wheat was 14 to 3
cents higher than the previous
close. May $2.99l-,. Corn was
14 to 3 cents higher. May $2 65S
7. jOats were 4 to 2 cents high
er, March $1-344- Soybeans were
7 cents lower, March $4.18.
Traders paid little attention to
reports that Secretary of Agricul
ture Anderson had told represen
tatives of brewing interests that if
they could not agree to 20 per
cent reduction in the overall use
of grain during the remainder of
the j current grain shortage he
would ask congress to give him
authority to require a reduction.
