one of the better local brawls of
the last few seasons. It's a boxer
vs. slugger duel, recognized 128
pound titlist Richards the for
mer". Its winner likely will be
handed a match with Joey Clemo,
a claimant to the Oregon title.
The handsome Portlander who
took over the title almost a year
ago when he outbiffed Snooks
Lacey in a grueling 15-rounder
here will go into the scrap slight
ly favored for the win. He has
proved in the past he Is not only
a smart operator but also that he
can go the entire IS if he has to.
On the other hand, the K-Falls
clouter who still has the fistic
faithful buzzing over the terrific
punching power he exploded in
kayoing Hal Fries two weeks ago,
has never had to go beyond six
heats. His two knockouts of Fries
came In the second and fourth
rounds. Consequently he will
shoot the works in the earlier
frames tonight.
Both gladiators will weigh in
this afternoon before Salem Box
ing Commission Chairman How
ard Maple. Both must not heft
over the 126-pound mark by fight
time. Respective managers, Larry
McLean of the former Chemawa
Indian schooler and Jack Samp
son of the Portlander, assure their
charges will be under the weight
level and that they are in tip-top
shape. Montgomery looked it when
he slammed out Fries two Wed
ncalays ago.
Chairman Maple has appointed
two judges. Harry Collins and Ed
Saunders to sit in on the scrap
as aids to Referee Packy McFar
land should It go the route. It
isn't likely either Judge or Mc
Farland will be around the prem
ises after the 10th round, how
ever, as Richards intends kayo
ing the Indian midway in the
fight. If the Indian doesn't get him
first.
Ticket sales have been heavy
for the mix. Indicating perhaps a
record gate. Matchmaker Tex Sal
keld and the promoting VFW did
not hike admission fees for the
party. Numerous reservations have
come in from both Portland and
southern Oregon.
The quartet of four-round pre
lims, booked by Salkeld with
naught but fast action in mind:
