Added Population Gted in Plea
For Spots on Road-Oiling List
Increased concentrations of population within the two-mile area
around Salem was stressed in requests before Marion county court
Thursday for inclusion on this year's road-oiling program. Other
complaints offered during the third day of the court's hearing included
suspension of or inability to obtain city bus service due to road con
ditions, as well as traffic dangers.
Representatives appeared for
roads at all points of the compass,
including Karl W. Wipper and
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Booth for the
Wipper road, where sharp curves
ami logging trucks were cited in
the plea for improvement; Claire
Vibbert for Schurman - Hansen
road, which he cited as a link
between South River and Liberty
roads, with 60 residents.
Melvin Crowe said travel on
Williams avenue has greatly in
creased due to camp meetings,
while the 38 residences are aug
mented in summer time by a
score of trailer houses. Discon
tinuance of bus service on Hayes
ville road was blamed by Sam
Sherman on the road's rough
condition and sharp corners. Ero
sion from rain and traffic were
cited as the difficulty on Vitae
Springs road, represented by Ar
thur Smither.
Hawthorne road, on which 39
families reside, is so rough as
to cause difficulty even for pedes
trians, said L. G. Gordy. who re
minded that two new streets have
boosted travel. H. Wolgren asked
topping for Ratcliffe drive and
Bluff street, where he said a new
building project is under way.
Anna Tasto said improvement
was sought on the Jones road in
order that bus service may be
secured, especially as a benefit
to a convalescent home.
J. S. Coomler cited rough sur
face and lack of proper drainage
for Childs and Sunnyview ave
nues, while W. M. Garnett called
brush along McCain avenue a
severe traffic hazard.

ward in today's market although
buying still was more or less
timid and many leaders failed to
make much if any headway.
Uneven tendencies and slow
dealings ruled until the fourth
hour when rails edged ahead and
prices elsewhere improved. While
there was a handful of wide
Jumpers at the close, the major
ity of advances held to fraction.
Volume was 890,000 shares against
820.000 Wednesday.
Mild reinvestment purchasing
and special situations accounted
for much of the recovery shift.
Wall Street's idea that the presi
dent's tax proposals would en
counter tough going in congress
also was a bullish factor.
The Associated Prens 60-stock
composite was up .4 of a point
at 65.9. Of 942 issues registering.

ended a session of erratic fluctua
tions with modest gains on the
board of trade today. Prices were
higher at the start and moved
ahead a few cents before selling
increased and sent prices below
the preceding close. A late rally
then cancelled losses.
Wheat closed "i-l's lower.
May $2.95-2.95 V. corn was 4-4
higher. May tZil-'j: oats were
l4-P higher, May $1.23-1.23,
and soybeans were 1 cent lower
to ' higher, March $4.20.
Hedging pressure depressed
wheat at one time, but brokers
said not much storage wheat had
as yet been sold by producers.
Reports from Kansas City assert
ed the production and marketing
! administration, government buy
ing agency, definitely would not
enter the flour market this week.
Mills claimed there was a fair
domestic flour business and the
navy purchased 50,000 sacks. The
Canadian dominion -bureau of
statistics noted some improvement
in the world grain supply, but
added that the food crisis is still
far from over. Weather In the
winter wheat belt was clear.
