When the bride and . groom

a forest green suit with swing
jacket, green alligator purse and

motor to Portland on New Year's
Day to- attend the open house for
which Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Thomas
E. Rilea, Brig. Gen. and Mrs.

and Mrs. Ralph P. Cowgill and
Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Raymond F.
Olson will be hosts at the Army
Navy club of Portland at the Port
land Air base between 3 and 7
o'clock.
The four high ranking officers
of the state military staff and
their wives are renewing the old
custom of being at home on New
Year's. This will be the first open
house since before the war. Over
a thousand invitations have been
sent to army and navy personel
throughout the state, city ana
county officials, legislators and

the past week had to contend with
the heaviest snowstorm in New
York's history.
The final short session of the
year was handicapped by staff
shortages on the exchange and the
desertion of. boardrooms by most
customers due to transportation
breakdowns. The board of gov
ernors decided hist before 10
am. to continue business as usual
mainly because it was the last day
in which tax sales could be made
in the regular way. Beginning
Monday such transactions must be
for cash.
Prices were fractionally mixed
and the ticker tape frequently idle
in tha day's operations. Trans
fers of 410,000 shares compared
with 800,000 last Saturday; For
the 5-day week the aggregate was
5,333,820 shares against 6,941,581
in the previous 6-day stretch.
The Associated Press 60-stock
composite on tha day was un
changed at 64 J, although, of 754
issues registering, 37& fell and 174
rose. The index for tha week was
off 4 of a point, first dip since
the week of December 6.
Cereals Close
Firm in Market
CHICAGO, Dee. 27-tfVA late
rally produced a firm close in all
cereals on the board of trade to
day. Tha rally started in new
crop wheat contracts and spread
to other pits. Trading continued
light and tha upturn .mainly re
fleeted a drying up of selling.
Only news to influence grains
was the purchase overnight of 22,
000 sacks of flour by Belgium.
That caused a little commercial
demand in wheat, but it was not
