Grains Riding
Upward Surge
CHICAGO, Dec. 20 - (JP) - A
short-covering movement in De
cember contracts caused a strong
upward surge in grains on the
board of trade today, marking a
new record high for any oats fu
ture and setting a number of new
seasonal peaks. Trading was fair
ly active. "
Closing prices in wheat and
oats were about at the day's
peaks,, although some last minute
selling depressed corn.
Wheat finished 3 to 6 high
er, December $3.15-3.16, corn
was l-3 higher, December
$2.63-, oats were 1 to 2
cents higher, December $1.29-
, &nd soybeans were 6 to 7
cents higher, March $4.00.
Overnight details of the Mar
shall plan of aid for Europe were
announced. . ,
Under this plan, the United
States would export 834,000,000
bushels of wheat and flour in the
four year period ending June 30,
1952, or an average of 208,500,000
bushels a year. This would be
considerably under exports of the
past two years, and somewhat be
low expectations.
Water District
Hearing Refeet
A Marion county court order
which had previously set a hear
ing on the proposed Pudding riv
er water. control district for Jan
uary 2 was revoked Saturday, and
the hearing reset for January 28.
Reason for the delay is because
the notices of the first hearing
were not published in Clackamas
county where part of the pro
posed river control district lies,
county officials said.
More than 20 per cent of the
land owners in the district filed
petitions with the court for estab
lishment of the district last month.
The January hearing will listen
to objections, if any, to the pro
posed district.
