Grove Community program tonight
at 8 p.m. is sponsored by the
alumni who extend an invitation
to all former pupils and patrons of
the school. During the program
the service flag will also be dis
mantled, with ceremony.
Salem Heights The Little Gar
den club, sponsors of a crab apple
contest, is reminding residents
along the Liberty road and the
Skyline that this fall is the best
time to plant the Aldenhamensis
(reb crab apple) for which prizes
will be awarded during the 1948
Cherry festival. "
Hubbard The Youth Center
was open for the first time Wed
nesday night Mrs. C. J. Friend,
Mrs. Gerald Myers and Duane
Hatcher are trustees. The young
people met with members of the
committee Wednesday night, to
plan activities. The center will be
self-supporting. Chaperons will be
obtained from various organiza
tions represented on the commit
tee. Talbot School health clinic for
first graders and selected students
will be held at the school Mon
day, November 24, from 9 a.m. to
11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30
p.m. Sidney and Looney Butte
school districts will also be in
cluded in the clinic, with Talbot
children examined in the morn
ing, and those from Sidney and
Looney Butte in the afternoon. An
Infant and pre-school health con
ference will be held at 2:30 p.m.,
with others from the three school
districts.
North Howell Mother's club of
North Howell will sponsor a
school beneefit carnival Friday
night at 7:30 p.m. at the grange, to
raise money to buy school play
ground equipment.- Games will be
played and refreshments served,
and everyone is invited to attend.
Two 4-H Sewing
Clubs Started in
Aumsville Area
AUMSVILLE Two 4-H sew
ing clubs have been started for
this year. Janice Richies is lead
ing Sewing I with the help of
Mrs. Elmer Klein. Bonnie Nichol
son is president of Sewing I,
Sharon Chamberlain, vice presi
dent and Shirley Nichol, secre
tary. The other two members are
Margaret Chamberlan and Joyce
Gruchow.
Mrs. Elmer- Klein is leading
Sewing II; III and IV. Patty
Nichol is president of this club,
Vida Schaffer, vice president and
Patty Schaeffer, secretary. Other
members are Lois Ann Holmquist,
Sally Klein. Doris Lucas, .Lor
etta Music, Winnifred Slater, Reta
Whorton, Helen and Ramona

Valley Obituaries
Mrs. Daniel Stnrgis -
Mrs. Daniel Sturgis, born in
Flora, Illinois in 1881, died Satur
day at the family home in Lacomb
where she had resided for the
past 23 years. Burial was in the
local IOOF cemetery Monday af
ter serv ices in the Huston chapel
conducted by the Rev. Paul Col
umbe of Lacomb? Mrs. Sturgis is
survived by her husband and by
one son, Walter Sturgis. She haM
four grandchildren.

To Conference
MT ANGEL Representing
Mt Angel Academy at the Na
tional Book Week conference will
be Marian Rickert, Mt Angel
Academy senior from Woodburn.
Held In connection with Catholic
Book fair, the conference will be
on November 23 at 1:30 in St
Mary's Cathedral auditorium,
Portland, and will have as its
general theme "Juvenile Delin
quency." Miss Rickert is scheduled to
talk on healthy, normal and genu
ine home life as a solution for
Juvenile delinquency. Her topic
entitled "Our Home's on the
Beam" will also Include unity, re
spect and happiness in the home
life of today.
Clement Roggenbach, also a
senior from Woodburn, will re
present Mt Angel Prep and will
speak en the topic "So You're
Going to a Catholic SchooL"

Brethren church Monday night
with 40 attending. Speaker was
the Rev. Mr. Rose, dean of the
seminary at Jennings Lodge.

cers was held at the meeting of
the Young People's Sodality of
Saint Mary's parish Monday night
Regina Traeger, a '47 graduate
of Mt Angel agademy, was elect
ed prefect and Chuck Erwert vice
prefect Laura Schwab, senior
academy student, won the major
ity vote for treasurer while Quin
Beyer received the office of sec
retary. Both Erwert and Beyer
were Prep graduates of '47.
Officers of. the past year were
Vincent Traeger, prefect, Bertha
Hassing,' vice prefect, Leon Bern
mg, secretary, and Mary Traeger,
treasurer.

take place the evening of Decem
ber 8, the feast of the Immaculate
Conception, at ceremonies In St

At Four Corners
To Hold Carnival
FOUR CORNERS Plans were
completed today for the Teen Kan
teen carnival at the community
hall here at 7:30 p. m. Saturday,
November 22, with the public in
vited. There will be concessions,
food, soft drinks and a free movie,
with a "special attraction" prom
ised at 8:30.
Co-chairmen ore LaJune Rahtz
and Phyllis Greene, with Mr. and
Mrs. L. J. Stewart as adult su
pervisors. The carnival is to raise
funds for a phonograph-radio
combination for the Teen Kanteen
club.
300-Pound Bear
Killed in Orchard

in an old orchard at the end of
the Pedee creek road Monday
morning. :

light stroke Sunday.
Charlie Ronco, who has been
employed at the E. M. Cates farm,
and his sister. Alberta Ronco, em
ployed at the Earl Gage home,

urday when their parents, Mr. and
