THREE YOUTHS FINED
Three Silverton youths arrested
Wednesday night in connection
with an attack on a fourth person
pleaded guilty to assault and bat
tery charges in Stayton justice
court Friday. Bill Floyd, Ira Dean
Todd and Maurice Mulkey were
sentenced to 30 days in jail, sus
pended upon payment of fines of
$50 and costs for each plus res
titution of damages and doctor's
expenses to the injured man,

PLAN FOR CONVENTION
A. H. Moore of Corvallis, presi
dent of the Oregon County Clerks
and Recorders association, was in
Salem Friday to discuss plans for
the program at the association's
December 11 and 12 convention in
Portland with Marion County Re
corder Herman Lanke. One of the
principal subjects of interest to
recorders is expected to concern
uniformity of fees, following
changes made by the 1947 state
legislative session.

BORDERS APPEALS
Notice of appeal to the state su
preme court from a Marion coun
ty circuit court decision denying
him a writ of habeas corpus was
filed Friday by Harley A. Bor
ders, inmate of the state peniten
tiary. The decision, handed down
Sept. 15, 1947, by Circuit Judge
E. M. Page, held that Borders.
sentenced in December, 1943, was
not "illegally imprisoned or rt
i strained." The suit named Prison
Warden George Alexander as de
fendant and was heard here in
September.

For the third time in 10 years
of' business here, ' Rohland's de
partment store in the Hollywood
district has been enlarged and re
modelled, and at 9 O'clock .this
morning will re-open in an en
tirely new building at 1983 N.
Capitol st.
, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rohland,
who own and operate the inde
pendent establishment, said Friday
they had invested $100,000 in the
business in ' the last six months.
The new building features an all
glass and stainless steel front
a show window for the entire
store. The building is three times
the size of the old store and has
two floors (8000 square feet) of
selling space. L. P. Bartholomew
is the building architect and H. C.
Hummell the contractor.

the, interior, emphasizing subtle
color effects combined with soft
indirect lighting and utilizing
shadow boxes for display. H. R.

Saalf eld Talks
On Gladioli
At Garden Club
The history, varieties and cul-f
ture of gladioli were discussed
by H. C. Saalfeld at the regular
meeting of the Salem Men's Gar
den club Thursday night at the
YMCA.
The flower was first noticed in
the area around Cape Town, Af
rica 2,000 years ago. Saalfeld said
Oregon's climate Is ideal for, rais
ing gladioli, he stated, adding
that some new varieties are priced
as high as $750 per bulb.
Moody Brenner won first place
in the chrysanthemum exhibition
of the flower show, and Ollie
Schenel won second. Brenner also
took first place in the Pom-Poms
division and K. O. Master was sec
ond. In the showing of perennials
Hastey took first and second place
awards. The best camelia sward
went to Walter Barkus and the
best potted plant prize to Al Clark.
The club voted to attend the Mc
Minnville club's meeting Monday
night, when that group will receive
its national charter! Thursday
night a group of local members
will attend, the Portland garden
club s annual pot-latch.

Hearing on Bus
Line Postponed
Hearing on the application of the
American Business, Inc. to oper
ate a bus service in Oregon has
been postponed indefinitely. Pub
lic Utilities Commissioner George
H. Flagg announced Friday.
The company asked permission
to operate between the California
Oregon boundary and Portland by
way of the Oregon coast, Salmon
River cut off and West Pacific
highway.
Flagg said the hearing would
not be held until the applicant de
cides definitely whether it would
operate a bus line in Oregon pro
vided the permit was granted.
