JFriday, OctoSer 31, for Mrs. Bar
bara Anna Novak Mauser, who
died October 27 at the home of
her daughter in McMinnville. The
.Rev. S- James Osborne conducted
the service. Interment in Masonic
cemetery west of McMinnville.
Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia
on July 29, 1866, she came to the
United States when 22 years of
age and wa a resident of Yam
hill county for 50 years. She mar
ried Jacob F. Mauser in 1929 and
he preceded her in death in May,
1947.
Survivors are two sons, Arthur
Novak, Frazier Park, Calif., and
Oscar of Los Angeles; daughter,
Mrs. Frank P. Wickert, McMinn
ville; a brother, Albert V. Cerney
of San Francisco; ! sister, Mrs F
J. Novak, Miami, Fla.; six grand
children
children.;
and five great grand-

ril 25, 1887, daughter of James A.
and Roseanne Layton, died No
vember 2. following a brief ill
ness in Corvaljis, Where she had
been making her home. Funeral
services were held at 1:30 pjn.,
Wednesday, November 5, from the
Warner-McHenry Funeral Home
in Corvallis, with burial in the
Providence cemetery near Scio.
Grace . Layton attended the
grade school at La comb and was
graduated from the Scio high
school, then was a student in the
pld Albany college for a time,
later teaching at the Cole school.
In J909 she was married to Gerile
Hessler and they made their home
at La comb. In 1939 Mrs. Hessler
moved to Corvallis where she was
employed as cook in various fra
ternities. She was a member of
the Philomath Baptist church.
Surviving are two sons, Leroy
J. Hessler of Bakersfield, Calif.,
and Ted G. Hessler, Albany; two
sisters, Mrs. Ollie. Hutchins of

survived by his widow, Margar

of Lebanon and Ralph of Salem;

lyn, N.Y., in 1877, died in a1 lo
cal hospital November 1. Inter
ment was. in the I OOF cemetery
Monday; November 3, after serv
ices in the Huston chapel con
ducted by the Rev. J. Harvey
Schmidt of the Presbyterian
church. Mrs. Edmonds who came
here from Arkansas, is survived
by three sons and two daughters:
Carl, Lawrence and Matthew Ed
monds, Mrs. Ro6s James and Mrs.
Herman Wilson, all of Lebanon.
Ell Glenn
ALBANY Funeral services
for Ell Glenn," 75, who died in
Tacoma, Wash November 3, will
be held in Albany from the Fort-
miller chapel at 1 o clock Friday,
November 7. Burial will be in the
Palestine cemetery. Glenn had
been ill only a short time.
Born July 15, 182 in Neosha,
Mo., Glenn came to Oregon 44
years ago to Mill City, Albany,
and more recently to Creswell. He
was a retired farmer. In 1891 he
married Matilda Jane Horton at
Caball, Miss. Following her death
he married again, and his second
wife died in Tacoma, Wash., on
Friday. October 31, and was bur
ied at Buckley, Wash., on Monday
of this week.
Surviving are four children.
Mrs. Greta Dennison of Tacoma,
Wash., Mrs. Denny Coughran of
Springfield, Mrs. Annis Davis of
Mill City, and Ernest Glenn or
Creswell. Surviving also are nine
grandchildren, eight great grand
children and a brother, Layton
Glenn of Pitcher, Okla. '
Edna Rose, Juanita Pellett, Lois
and Myrtle King; one sister, Al
ice Cox, Valsetz and three broth
ers, George of Molalla, Elmo of
Redmond and Lloyd of Summit.
Jefferson D. Gainer
LEBANON Jefferson D.
Gainer, born in West Virginia,
June 11th, 1861, died at his home
Wednesday, November 5. A resi
dent of this community for 37
years he is survived by his wid
dow, Flyorence Gainer, and by
three daughters and six sons: Mrs.
R. W. Mornings tar, Mrs. Pearl Lo
gan and Mrs. George Engasser,
Gleason Gainer of Lebanon; Bert
of Waldport; Theodore, Beryl and
Ivan of Portland and Earl of Sa
lem. Funeral services are being
arranged by the Huston Funeral
Home. Interment will be in the
family plot in the Masonic cemetery.
Mrs. Margaret Warner
McMINNVILLE Died at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. Kun
nie Hendershott, in McMinnville,
November 6, at the age of 87. She
is survived by three daughters.
Mrs. E. E. Burch of Salem. Mrs. !
Kunnie Hendershott of McMinn
ville, and Mrs. Lee Tate of Port
land; two grandchildren and two
great - grandchildren. Funeral
services will be at Macy's Funeral
home in McMinnville at 1:30 p.m.,
Saturday, November 8.
Otto Henry Schwab
SILVERTON, Nov. 6 Otto Hen
ry Schwab, 61, died Wednesday at
a local hospital. He had lived in
Silverton for the past 17 years and
was the husband of Louise Schwab,
who survives.
Funeral services will be held to
day at 2:30 in the memorial chapel
of the Ekman funeral home with
final rites at Gervais cemetery. The
Rev. S. L. Almlie will officiate.
The deceased was born Oct. 11.
1888, at Morganville, ' Kan. He
served as a mail carrier on Sil
verton rural routes for several
years prior to last summer, when
he retired.
In addition to the widow he is
survived by two daughters, Mrs.
Monica Stokx of San Luis Obispo,
Calif., and Mrs. Eloise Johnson
of Silverton; two .sons, Orville
Schwab of Grants Pass and Arland
Schwab of Silverton; two brothers,
Zeno Schwab of Gervais and Ar
thu Schwab of Clatskanie, and
three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Batters
by of Portland, Mrs. Martha Reil
ing of Wood burn and Mrs. Susie
i Cutsforth of Gervais.

signalman 3c, United States
navy, son of Mrs. Lucille Booster,
is home on a 60-day leave from
two years overseas duty in the
Philippines and China. He will
report at San Francisco for re
assignment at the expiration of
his leave.
The word soap is believed to
have been derived from Sapo
Hill, a sacrificial spot near Rome
where the clay, which was satu
rated with fat mixed with alkali
and - ashes from the altar fires,
proved useful in washing clothes.
