Middle Grove Mrs. Lee Dow
spent the past week visiting her
daughter and son of Portland and
Longview, respectively.

place recently vacated by the
Louis Petersen family. They will
move as soon as the remodeling
is completed.

Salem, which opened Monday, are

on "Can Europe Be Saved?" at
the first dinner meeting of the
Presbyterian Men's club, 9:20 p.m.
Tuesday, October 14, at the church.
Dr. Peters, professor of German
at Reed college, was educated in
Germany and England. During
1944 and 1945 he was with the
Office of Strategic Services in
England, France, Germany, Bel
gium, and Holland. Dr. Peters is
a linguist, journalist, and author of
"Invasion by Shortwave. Men's
club begins this winter season
with series of programs arranged
by the executive committee com
posed of C. W. Garrison, president;
Sam Harbison, vice president; Ar
thur B. Bates, secretary; Robert T.
Stanley, treasurer.

the Lions now. This will be the
first game under lights here for
many seasons, and one of the big
sports events in recent time,
members of; the club believe.
Jerry Gastineau, sports direc
tor for the high school, is mak
ing arrangements to handle a
large crowd. Extra bleachers will
be provided.
A mammoth student rally will
be held Thursday at 7 p. m. be
fore the game. The public Is in
vited to attend the rally.
The local Lions club is sending
a challenge group to Stayton
early next week in hopes of
creating added enthusiasm so that
a large group of Stayton rooters
will al.vo attend the game.

Community Chest campaign in
Silverton this season will mean
the launching of a full recreation
al program for the fust lime in
Imal history, Clifford Almquist,
head of the recreational associa
tion, says: Need for such a pro
gram has been felt for a long
time and various efforts have
been made to have it carried out,
he said.
It is the intention of the Sil
verton Recreational association
to engage full-time director to
be the organizer and coordina
tor of the formal and informal
recreational program for the city.
The budget committee of the
association, at its fall meeting,
made provisions for an office and
supplies necessary for the suc-i-estiful
function of uch a pro
gram. Plans are already in the
making for running basketball
leagues in town this winter.
