Stock Market
Average Rises
NEW YORK, SepL 29 - (P) -The
stock market broke its lengthy
string of losing Mondays with a
modest average advance led by
steels and selected industrials.
Activity picked up at intervals
after the opening but slowdowns
were frequent. Gains running to
a point or more maintained the
majority at the close.
Buying was attributed partly to
the thought that the recent de
cline had put the list in technical
shape for a fll rally. Some bid
ding also was based on the be

LONDON, Sept. 29.-(1,)-Prin-cess
Elizabeth turned up tier foy
al nose at long skirts today.
She made her first public ap
pearance here since the long skirt
fashion took hold, and she chose
a suit with a skirt just covering
the knees.
s "Coo! And it's fine she did,"
exclaimed a typist who shares a
popular British view of the Just-above-the-ankles
trend.
The princess, ending a seyen
week stay at Balmoral castle in
Scotland, came home Mo get on
with preparations for fter wed

Nov. 20.
The British guild of creative
designers, which largely controls
fashions here, announced last
week that long skirts will be re
sisted firmly in Britain because
they take more scarce cloth. 1

Actor Divorce
LOS ANGELES, SepL
Actor Brian Donlevy's divorce
from Marjorie Lane Donlevy was
ordered set aside today by Super

Her attorney argued that she is
a "weak, sleepless, misguided lit

her property rights."
He asserted that during con

resulted in granting the decree
last Feb. 11, Donlevy's residence
was not corroborated in court.
Earlier today Donlevy filed two

Grain Prices
Climb Limit
j. 1
As Need Grows
By th Associated Press
Grain prices soared the, limit on
all North American exchanges to
day as President Truman moved
to determine whether to call a
special session of congress to deal
with - European aid.
Other commodity gains, in
cluding a new 1947 high for choice
steers in the; Chicago ' market,
were recorded.
It was the emphasis on the
tight world grain situation un
derlined by the White itutise
meeting and a recommendation
made during the week end by the
Harriman committee to Mr. Tru
man that 570,000,090 bushels, of
grain be shipped abroad that re
sulted in today's inflationary
trend of grain prices.
" Wheat gained 10 cents on the
Chicago, Minneapolis and Kan
sas City boards; corn rose 8 cents
at Chicago and Kansas City, and
oats advanced 6 cents at Chicago
and Minneapolis. In all cases, the
rise was the limit permitted dur
ing a single day'r trading at the
exchanges.
Livestock ranged steady up to
75 cents higher in Chicago, with
hogs leading the trend at a top
for- choice butcher grades of
$28.75 a hundred pounds. A new
1947 top of $35.90 was reached
for strictly choice steers. Native
spring lambs were mostly $22.5
but one load sold for $23.
A new upward surge of soap
prices was heralded by the an
nouncements of two leading man
ufacturers that they -were in
creasing the cost of their prod
uct 10 per cent. The manufac
turers. Proctor and Gamble and
Lever Brothers, announced also
that they had raised they-price of
vegetable shortening 3 per cent.
In the New York commodity
markets, butter gained a quarter
of a cent a pound, with AA grade
selling at 78 cents. Eggs were
unchanged, but some grades of
cheese advanced as much as 24
cents a pound. Wholesale meat
prices remained steady, but cocoa,
cottonseed oil, hides and rubber
futures rose.
