Mikesell Orchard ists and gardeners are reminded; by O. E. Mikesell, coun ty agent in Linn county, that cover crops will make the great est fertility return if seeded in the fall. i Suggested .crops or combination of crops are 60 to 80 pounds of common or Willamette vetch, 40, to 30 pounds of common or Wil lamette vetch and 60 pounds of either fall barley, fall oats, or fall rye, 10 to 15 pounds of crimson clover, two to five pounds of turnips or 100 to 125 pounds of fall Rye. Austrian peas may also be used. All seeding rates are for one acre. Cover crop fertilization at seed ing time is recommended for greatest growth. A combination of nitrogen! and phosphate is best for a mized legume and grain cover crop. Straight nitrogen for non-legumes and straight phos phate for legumes are recom mended.; The growing of a good cover crop, says Mikesell, is the cheap est way: to maintain or increase the organic matter in soils. along- tha said northerly projection and the ; west line of said Block M to the southwest corner of said Black M; thence easterly along tha south Una of aokd Block SS to a point that will .intersect tha northerly, projec tion of i the weft line af Summer Street; thence southerly along tha said northerly projection ana the west Una of Summer Street to tne north una of Lot a. Madsen - Farm Editor. The Statesman There is no smoke, no whistle- blowing, no labor union , meet ings. Instead of contents of lunch buckets being eaten in the shade of drying sheds, they are eaten in the shade of tall trees growing but few rods from the mill. And instead of a mill pond filled with unsawed logs, the. view offers dairy cattle drinking' from - a small stream, and farm fields. But there is the singing of ,the saw, sawdust and piles of lum ber. The timber harvest is on. When you get Oregon's two largest Industries together you have something big. Even when you get them together in a small way you ! still have something big. The tact that it is small is one of the big things about it, says Frank Kahut, where the lumber harvester was at work when I found it With this meth od, even farmers with small lots of timber can be benefitted, he explains. In fact, big timber tracts or very big timber are not for the harvester. Ever since Daniel Waldo came to Oregon in 1843, Willamette valley farmers have sold timber and fuel wood from their places. But until now they have not thought of it as a harvest. It has been something they could get rid of for a cash price with the added incentive that there would be more land to be farmed as soon as it was cleared. rive-Man Crew Needed The idea of the harvester is something different. The farmer with the small woodlot who has trees which are ripe for cutting and who might like lumber for a new bam or chicken house. contacts the Farm Sawyers of Oregon, just as he might contact the neighbor with a combine. P. A. KelUtedt, president, and the man who runs the harvester. bring out his little rig, the farm er himself helps and shires neigh bors to assist in the harvest. The harvester averages 5,000 feet a day and can put out 7,000 if conditions are just right. Tim bers up to 22 feet long can be cut, but the farmers should not cut too large trees, he wants. A 24x26 inch timber 16 feet long is the largest, although the long er trees can be sawed if they are not too large. The farmer shouldn't cut his logs and let them lie around for a year or so. Sawing., them then will be more expensive as there is more stopping for saw filing, with the men waiting. If the logs are saw ed while green the saws are kept cooler and can run longer without filing. If there are trees cut too large for the harvester they should be sold to one of the small mills in tha valley. Sells MM Feci Most of the stands on a arm average from 10 days to two weks, KelUtedt says. At the Kahut ranch the harvester re mained two weeks and cut close to 50,000 feet of Umber. Kahut says he sold 8,000 of this and may sell a little more. But he has some farm buildings he wants to put up. The trees were taken from a nine-acre farm woodlot used for pasturing. A small sec tion will be cleared, the remain der will stay as a farm woodlot with only the riper timber re moved. A piece of standing tim ber is awfully nice on the home ranch, Kahut believes. He ad mits he is fond of his stand and he knows every tree in it as he was born on the ranch. Mr. Kellstedt charges $1S a thousand, but he figures actual cost of the lumber laid down at $28.50. This includes the wages paid to the help and allowed to the farmer himself. It also in cludes the cutting of the trees and bringing them to the saw. But on the market this lumber would cost the farmer something close to $60 a thousand, Kahut says. New Law Effective Mr. Kellstedt reminds the farmers of th new ruling pro vided by the 1947 legislative amendment to the Oregon foret conservation act. The new re quirements go into effect Janu ary 1, 1948. Anyone, including farmers, who cut timber for any commercial purpose after that date must have a permit. It cov ers all cutting of timber off the farm such as logs, pulp wood, poles, fuel wqpd, Christmas trees and cascara bark. The purpose of the amendment is to insure that each person cutting timber leaves a seed source for re-stocking. Two seed trees must be left per acre, or five per cent of the tim ber stand left uncut in blocks. The state has been careful to allow for the farmer who wishes to cut his timber and put the land into pasture or cultivation. Me is given a permit to clear the land as he wishes. After five years state conservation officers will come back to' inspect the area to make sure that the land is being used for grazing or has been sown to crops, and that de velopment was not given as an excuse for stripping permanent forest land.. In the case of logging off tim ber, the state forester believes the farmer would be wise to have a written contract with the log ger that should require the ope rator to comply with slash burn ing and the conservation law re quirements. This is to protect the farmer, since payment of costs would have to be assumed by the farmer if the violation of FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP Aulo - Truck - Fire YOU TOO ar entitled to a Savings on your Automobile. In the rase of the lumber harvester, the farmer cuts his own timber and clears up whatever Is required afterwards, for as a rule only certain trees are cut and no wild slashings left. Farmers Will Receive Crop-Reporting Cards During the last few days , of September approximately 800,000 farmers throughout the nation will be asked to help the crop re porting service in making a final check of 1947 crop production. In Oregon alone, 13,000 farmers or one out of five will receive cards from their agricultural sta tistician on which to report the acreage of each important crop harvested and to be harvested on their ranches this year. The farm ers being contacted are well dis tributed and represent a cross sec tion of the state's agriculture, but the fact that the survey is on a sample basis makes it very Impor tant for those who receive cards to report irrespective of the size of operations. Information on pro duction is of fundamental impor tance to both the farming inter ests and the government. The post office department is cooperating; with the crop reporting service in distributing the acreage cards, which will be mailed to farmers from Portland on September 26.
