Truck Hits Horse,
Highway Blocked
Traffic was blocked on high
way 99 E near Lake Labish for a
short time about 2 a. m. this mor
ning as a heavy truck and trailer
struck a horse, turning the trailer
across the road, state police said.
The first report indicated no
one was injured. The horse was
killed by the impact,

Responsibility for a new stand
ard training program for Salem
city firemen has been delegated
to Capt Ellsworth Smith, vet
eran of the local- fire depart
ment who recently returned
from an Oregon Fire college in
structors' course conducted in
Corvallis by the Oregon Fire
Chiefs association.
The local program is schedul
ed to start immediately after
Fire , Prevention week, October
5-11.
, Smith said the object of the
new program is the development
of standard training methods in
all Oregon fire departments. In
creased efficiency of fire fight
ing methods through t adherence
to a training manual, presented
to each graduate of the school.

High praise of the new pro
gram was voiced by Smith, who
said the training would contrib
ute" much to the Salem fire ser
vice and to the citizens of the
entire state in the future. Smith
said the training would be con
tinued until every fire depart
ment in the state has at least
one graduate In Ua ranks.
Next year courses will be in
stituted at Klamath Falls and
La Grande to make it more con
venient for firemen in those dis
tricts to attend, Smith said.

George Readhead, 14, told juve
nile authorities he drove an 11
ton, 44-passenger Los Angeles
street bus 120 miles to San Diego
last night but not empty all the
way. He gave a hitch-hiking sailor
a free lift he said.
The sailor had left the bus
when police found it, with George
still at the wheel, stalled broad
side across a suburb road.
Young Headhead said he took
the bus from a Pacific Electric
Railway Co., parking yard be
cause he wanted to make a trip to
nearby Escondido and couldn't
find any smaller vehicle with a
starting key.
General Strike
In Trieste Ends
TRIESTE, Free Territory, Thurs
day, Sept. 25 -4JP)- The Allied mil
itary government of the Trieste
Free Territory announced early to
day that the general strike which
paralyzed the port area yesterday
and resulted in 12,000 workers
leaving their jobs, ended at mid
night
The agreement to end the tie-up
provided, the military government
said, that AMG "provisionally"
would release nine Smdacati Unicl
members arrested early Wednes
day and accused of molesting
workers who refused to participate
in the strike. They will be brought
to trial within 48 hours.

Truman Running Mate
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 24-W)
The chairman of the Oregon dem
ocratic central committee today
recommended Justice William O.
Douglas to run as vice-presidential
candidate with President
Truman in 1948.
In a telegram to the demo
cratic national chairman, Byron
G. Carney, Portland, declared
that Douglas would "have more
than an even chance of carrying
every one of the eleven western
states."
NAGASAKI CROPS GOOD
TOKYO, Sept. 24 -JP- Summer
crops grown, from the atomic-
bombed soil of Nagasaki have in
creased 50 to 300 per cent over
normal yields, a Japanese agricul
tural expert reported today.
