society will hold their first meet
ing of the fall season at Peterson
Butte near Silvertcn Sunday, Oc
tober 15, Prof. Herman Clark an

plans to study marine fossils and
eashells at the base of the butte.
Clark also announced the first
club lecture will be held October
24, but said the speaker for the
meeting had not yet been selected.

City police Wednesday were
called to investigate an attempted
break-in at Nollman and Engler
sporting good store, 362 State st,
on Tuesday night Police said
someone had attempted to enter
the store by prying the back door,
but apparently was unsuccessful,
and nothing was taken.

Clarence William Nevinski and
Floyd Eugene Stalen, all of Los
Angeles, charged with the theft
of a tire from a Salem service
station recently, are slated to ap
pear in Marion county district
court today. The trio, held in
lieu of $750 bail each in the coun
ty jail, were returned from Eu
gene Thursday by Sheriff Denver
Young and were scheduled to ap
pear in district court Wednesday.

JACKSON APPOINTED
Emory C. Jackson was appoint
ed constable of the Silverton dis
trict by Marion county court Wed
nesday . on recommendation of a
number of Silverton citizens. John
Dickenson had been named for the
post to succeed E. W. O'Brien,
but failed to qualify, the court
order stated.

Peters, who was paroled Tuesday
from Marion county Jail, Wed
nesday turned over to Sheriff J.
R. Devitt of Santa Cruz county,
Calif., where she is wanted on a
charge of issuing fictitious checks,
the Marion county sheriffs office
reported. The 28-year-old woman
was recently sentenced to 90 days
in the county jail on a charge of
obtaining money by false preten
ses involving bad checks cached
in Salem and Stayton. Her hus
band, William E. Lamberson cf
Tacoma, Wash., was sentenced to
a total of four years in the state
prison last month on two check
charges and she also was sentenc
ed to three years in the prison on
a forgery charge but was paroled.

the apartments Monday.

A notice of retirement from the
building contracting firm of

clerk by James Minty.
TAYLOR IN JAIL
Gordon tuner 'lay lor, Albany,
is Jn Marion county jail aerving
a 15-day sentence imposed by
Silverton justice court Tuesday.
He was fined $14 and sentenced
to 10 days in jail on a charge of
operating a vehicle as a private
carrier in a commercial enterprise
and also was sentenced to five
days and fined $7 on a charge of
operating a motor vehicle without
clearance light. He .was arrested
by state police earlier this week
near Silverton.

New decking is being placed
this week on the Santiam river
bridge at Stayton as a Marion
county bridge crew repairs the
bridge for tho winter months.
Following avnew deck the bridge
approaches on both sides will be
re-filled and leveled, the Marion
