Vernie Johnson and Joe of Oak
land, Calif, are visiting relatives
here. Mrs. Johnson is a daughter
of Mrs. rWoodard of Dayton and
a granddaughter of Mrs. Charles
Clow. . Little Joe is the first great
grandchild of Mrs. Clow.
Mrs. Victor Gieger and Mrs.
Lloyd Zentner were hostesses at
a surprise party for their husbands
who recently celebrated their
birthdays. The party was held in
the Webfoot grange hall.
Mrs. T. A. Boulden of Dayton
has sold her home to Mr. and Mrs.
Giles Rockhill and is moving to
her new residence recently con
structed ; at the home of her son
and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Marion Boulden of this district.
Mary Wiley will teach commerce
in the New berg high school this
year. School starts September. 15.
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Edwards
and family motored to Tillamook
Sunday to spend the day with
Mr. Edwards' sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Marvin Fitch and family. v
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Withee, Jr.
and Stanley I were Sunday guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Yung and,,
son of Salem.
Spending the day at the Baptist
Camp, Arrah Wanna, near Mt.
Hood, were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin
Rutschman, Mrs. Anna Rutsch
man, Alvin and Louis. They also
visited Timberline Lodge.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith
of Deer Island visited Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Withee Saturday. Smith
is Mrs. Withee's nephew.
A letter received here from Da
vid Launer who just arrived in
Naples, Italy, reports details of his
stay there. He plans to visit among
other places, Mt. Vesuvius and the
ruins of Pompeii. He will go to
some port in Greece, and left the
states August 2, arriving in Italy
August 14 with the U.S. navy.
Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Orndruff and
daughter of Portland visited Fred
Withee Friday.

returned home Tuesday.
Dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Clark Noble Wednesday were Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Turner of Eugene,
Mr. and Mrs.' Lloyd Turner and
sons of Ventura, Calif, and Mr.
and Mrs. Harla"n Noble and son.
Charles Hively of Waldport was
guest of the Clark Nobles Wed
nesday. Some of his friends were
with him and they took vegetables
and fruit back with them Thursday.
Four Corners Players
To Be Banquet Guests
FOUR CORNERS The Four,
Corners baseball team and the
coaches will be entertained at a
banquet at the Community hall
Wednesday night, September 10.
Fathers and other men of the
community interested in the ball
players will be hosts. Food will
be prepared by mothers of the
players and served by the young
girls.
Al Schu!s from radio station
KOCO will talk to the guests.
Others invited are Don Hendrie,
president of the baseball league,
Dick Hendrie and Irving Zeller,
umpires, and William McKinney,
who loaned the baseball field
for practice.
Polk County Men Take
Northern Hunting Trip
DAT .I-AS Henry G. Friesen,
owner of Friesen's Gas Station,
and L. M. Dennis of Oakdale dis
trict have returned from a hunt
ing trip to Alaskan points.
They left in late July, going by
the Alcan highway, In an army
command car fitted with the ne
cessary equipment. Most of the
hunting was done out from Circle
City, 100 miles north of Fairbanks,
where they hunted bear and cari
bou, bagging five of the latter.
Friesen spent some time in an
Anchorage hospital for injuries
received in a fall.

with the average sale totaling

berg, for $385.00. Buyers coming
from Washington state for the
affair were C. D, Wilson of Olym
pia who purchased six head of
cattle, Edna Mobbs of Elmo and
Thomas L. Bedingfield and Son of
East Stanford, Wash.

Bob Barnes of Silverton was
second high individual scorer in
the Future Farmers judging com
petition at ihe Oregon state fair.
Dick Reid of Molalla led the com
petition and Ijwrence Fisher of
Silverton was sixth in line. Al
bert Williams of Salem was 11th.
The Silverton team took top
honors in judging Jerseys, with
Barnes again leading scorer. The
results were as follows.
