Hot and Happy
Fair's Opening Day Draws Large
3rowd of Picnickers; Displays Good
x By Maxine Bur en
Stattsman Woman's Editor
Well, the opening of Oregon's 82nd state fair brought just what
the public wants in temperature, a good hot day where everyone
can sit around and mop brows, eat melting ice cream and nurse tired
feet. :
While the crowd was ample, it
seemed les condensed than last
year and certainly the lineups for
food and rest rooms were far
smaller. Everyone seemed pretty
contented and -we heard only a
few calls for; mothers o( lost
children over the loud speaker
Monday.
The state police's fancy figure
8 traffic plan Us, unique, giving
everyone a charice to allow every
one else to cro$s the traffic first.
L vers resting in each other's
arma on the lawns amid picnick
ing families and playing children,
seemed to mind neither publicity
nor heat. j
One family Igroup, sitting on
the ground seemed oblivious to
the state lair and centered their
interrat on the ballgame cming
over a portable radio which they
had brought along.
Though the large displays of
farm machinery really beckoned
me, I dutifully Kvent to the wom
en's f department, where cooked
foods and handwork were to be
reported upon.
While display In the food and
needlework sections seem small
again this yer, the quality is
good and the arrangement pleas
ing. An over-abundance of en
tries always makes for a more
cluttered display.
Last year we blamed the small
number of canned goods entries
on the shortage of sugar;' this
year we have to cast around for
another reason probably that too
many women have given up 'can
ning for freezing. '
Cookies, cakes and breads took
a jump over last year, and look
exceptionally good. No doubt the
large 4-H club exhibits .draw
heavily from the woman' de
partment entries.
The weaving entry, spurred on
no doubt by the recent weaver's
conference,, seem a bit larger and
certainly better than in previous
years.
There are manv ouilts. dis
played well and high so they can
be seen. Crocheted and Knutea
work entry seems large, and em
broidery work about the same as
usual. There is a very attractive
showing of needlepoint and petit
point.
One should spend at least an
hour in the woman's department,
and return several times to see it
all.
