ATHLETIC PARK, Wenatchee,
Aug. 28- (Special) -The Salem
Senators tonight lost chance to
cut the. gap betkeen themselves
and the league-leading Bremerton
Bluejackets when they blew an
18-12 "pitchers' battle" to the
Wenatchee Chiefs. The two teams
finish the locaj series tomorrow
night, after Which Salem goes
home to finish the season with
13 games.
Bremerton's loss to Vancouver
tonight kept the Senators but k
games out of first place, but
those same Vancouvers climbed
into third only half a game be
hind Salem when the Spokane
Indians lost a doubleheader at
Yakima. Victoria won over Ta
coma to stay within three games
of the league lead although the
Vies are in fifth place in this, the
tightest In WIL history.
Hunk Anderson started for Sa
lem tonight but was wild and
was relieved by Gene Peterson.
Peterson was rapped for most of
the Wenatchee runs and the de
feat Salem banked IS hits, Wen
atchee 18. A five-run rally in
the fifth put Wenatchee ahead
and in the seventh six more runs
iced the wild game.
Badly in need of pitching, the
Salems displayed that want more
than ever tonight. Bill Beard was
Salem's big gun by driving in five
runs.

night won the Oregon Softball
championship with a 5-2 win over
Corvallis In the final game of
the tournament here. Earlier to
night the Itoseburg team lost
third place to Eugene by a 4-3
count. Both the Hudson House
and Corvallis teams will represent
the state in the regional tourna
ment at Seattle beginning to

none too favorable today, but the state game commission's weekly
fishing bulletin predicted Improved salmon catches for the week
end. The outlook by districts:
Portland area Good sturgeon catches reported at several
points along Columbia In Columbia county, and some harvest trout
catches In Columbia near Lewis liver mouth. Salmon catches ex
pected to Improve In Columbia next. week. p
Willamette valley-Lane county angling spotty, with only few
limit catches. Evening fishing best. Triangle and Fern Ridge lakes
producing nice bass and catfish catches.
Coastal area Salmon and trout fishing In Clatsop county
should Improve this weekend. Lincoln county poor for trout, and
no large salmon runs yet. Seabass angling from south Jetty of Ya
quina bay very good.: Tillamook county: Some cutthroat trout tak

Oregon first game bird bunting
opens next Monday when the
15-day dove season and the 30
day pigeon season begins. Bag
limits a day or In possession are
eight pigeons and ten doves. The
pigeon season covers the entire
state. Doves, however, may be
shot only In 16 counties: Lake,
Klamth, Deschutes, Jackson.
Josephine, Coos, Curry. Crook,
Wasco, Sherman, Jefferson,
Hood River, Wheeler, Gilliam
and Morrow.

Sacramento dropped Oakland out
of a third place tie with Portland

All-America football conference
tomorrow night launches its sec
ond season in a key battleground
city of its box-office scrap with
the long-established National
Football league. Coached by James
(Sleepy Jim) Crowley, who last
year was the new league's com
missioner, the Chicago Rockets
open a seven-game home season
at Soldier field against the Los
Angeles Dons.
There are no actual schedule
conflicts between the Hix-ketB and
the rival National loop's Chicago
Cardinals and champion Dears,
but the fact the three teams offer
a total of 30 Chicago contests, no
less, may result In some selective
sight-seeking by local fans.

Tourneys Set
SEATTLE. Aug. 28 -(A) More
than 140 softbalt pluyt-rs from
Idaho, Washington and Oregon
among them Oregon state col
lege's great hoop star. Lew Beck
will open the annual regional
tourney here tomorrow night,
shooting for a trip to the nationals
in Cleveland. Beck will play with
the Corvallis team. Also on hand
will be Idaho's state champion,
the First Security Bank dub of
Boise, which is set to meet Brem
erton at 9:30 p.m. (PST.) to
morrow. The opening game, start
ing at 8:15, will send the Dahl
Sawyers of Vancouver , against
Hall at O'Leary of Seattle.
In the women's division the
Spokane B.O.F. will open against
the Seattle Skyroom Skylarks at
7 p.m. Friday, The Boise Jay
cettes will meet the Salem Box
at noon ' Saturday, followed by
clashes between Papier-Scott,
Seattle, and the winner of the
second game; and Lind Pomeroy.
Portland, versus the winner of
game No. 1. Action will continue
through Monday.
