    Spraying CoriV
Field Cheaper
Than Hoeing
As a selective weed spray, 2, 4-D
hat been successfully used in corn
fields with weeds auch a pig
weed, la.ir.bs quarter and morn
ing glory.
In Yamhill county, Norton Tay
lor, assistant county agent, re
ports that Gu Wilson of Dundee,
Roger Dundi of McMinnville and
Carl Hurner of Carlton are using
2. 4-D in corn this year as an
esperiroent.
tn the Roy Will farm near Mc
Minnvile. Taylor reports the spray
machine which was rented from
Buchannan Cellers Grain company
in McMinnville, was observed us
ing 2, 4-D at a cost of approxi
mately S4 an acre. Will said that
he had hoed out a row of corn and
that it had taken 50 minutes. With
the spray machine, eight rows
were sprayed at one time In two
minutes and 10 seconds. By using
the spray machine, Will estimated
that he saved $35 an acre in hoe
ing costs.
Corn Jumps to
Record High
CHICAGO, June 25-P)-An ac
tive demand for corn based on
pessimistic crop report created a
new record high, for the July con
tract at $2.02 V on the board of
trade today.
All deferred corn contracts also
were strong. Oats made fractional
gains while wheat, after record
ing losses for nearly the entire
session, rose in the last 15 minutes
to end with minor gams. Both
wheat and oats were aided by the
upturn in corn.
Wheat closed Vi-Wa higher,
July $2.17i-V4, corn was 2V-
4Vi higher, July $2.02-$2.02V,
and oats were )- higher, July
98-971,.
. Under pressure from the wool
growers, the use of cotton was
banned in England in 1700.
Livestock Croups
Plan Meeting at
Glen Martin's
The Polk and Marion county
Livestock associations members
have set July 13 as the date to
hold their family picnic at Glen
Martin's Double Oak . Hereford
farm near McCoy, reports Russell
T. Daulton, Polk county asssiUnt
agent.
All members of the family are
invited to attend and bring a hot
dish. Hamburgers and mutton-
burgers will be furnished on the
grounds.
The program will begin at 10
a.m. and will consist of judging
two classes of beef, two of sheep
and two of hogs. It is planned
to grade five beef type bulls.
Professor Julius E. Nordby from
the University of Idaho will be
a special guest. He is in charge
of livestock experimental work
there as well as author of books
on selecting, fitting and showing
sheep, horses, hogs, beef and dairy
cattle.
Fred McKenzie, head of animal
husbandry at Oregon State col
lege, and Joe Johnson, newly ap
pointed professor in animal hus
bandry at Corvallis, also plan to
attend this meeting.
School Districts
Reduction Noted
The number of school districts
in Oregon has been reduced from
2,500 in 1918 to 1.600 at the
present time. Rex Putnam, state
superintendent of public instruc
tion, reported Wednesday.
Reduction in the number of
school districts was attributed to
modern transportation facilities
which have peeded school con
solidations. Putnam said further
reduction in the number of Ore
gon school districts may be expected.
