RETURNS FROM TOURNEY
Cornelius Bateson, Salem high
school student who went to St.
Louis, Mo, last week to compete
in the National Forensic league's
national tournament returned
Tuesday after having placed sixth
in extempore speaking, among
contestants from 19 states. He
called the contest "tough but fun."
Bateson is a member of the SHS
debate and forensic team coached
by Amanda Anderson.

A $250 fine and a 30-day sus
pended jail sentence was given
Sjdney R. Seime, .Woodburn, who
appeared in Salem justice court
Tuesday on charges of driving
while intoxicated. Seime was ar
rested near Brooks by state police
March 23 and entered a plea of
guilty to the charge on April 24
