Plicnothiaziiic Preventative, Not a Cure At the all-day animal spraying demonstration held by the Yam hill County Livestock association at the B. A. McPhillip farm near WcMinnville. methods of spray ing sheep for ticks 'and livestock diseases ,and parasited were dis cussed.' f ; " Robert Every extension ento mologist, pointed out that from 4 to 8 pounds of 50 per cent wet- . table DDT powder in 100 gal lons of water would spray' ap proximately 175 to 200 sheep. Ac cording to Every the tick moves about the body of the sheep and, therefore, : it is not necessary to spray the entire fleece of the " animal Under normal conditions it is best to make a fall appli cation in; order that the ticks may be destroyed prior to lambing, "in is is best, according to Every, because ticks do greater damage to lambs. DDT does' not hava any 1)1 effect upon animals being sprayed providing it is not used in oil solution. The cost of the material is 1 to 14 cents per head not including the cost of labor. About 350 head of sheep and lambs were sprayed in ao proximately one and a half hours at the McPhillips farm. Bone OU Best At the afternoon meeting. Dr. Shaw; head "of , the veterinary medicine department at the state college, said tha$ there are few diseases of - sheep and, cattle , for which, control measures have-not been found. He suggested that bone oil and not pine tar be used to control flies and maggots re sulting' from- scours or injury in sheep. The bone oil has very strong odor which flies do not like, be added. In discussing the use of pheno thiazine. Dr. Shaw said that it was a preventative measure rather than a treatment for sheep in fested with worms. Where sheep are infested with, worms a Nema capsule should be used and pheno thiazine mixed in solution at the rate of one part of phenothiazine and 9 to 15 parts salt and be Mastitis Loss ' Reaches Two Million, State Estimates of loss from mastitis to Oregon dairymen is now shown at over two million dollars. Losses are attributed to lower milk pro duction, feeding of non-productive cows, disruption of the breed ing program, ' discarding pf ? infected- milk, permanent injury to udders and selling infected cows for beef. , Treatment alone of mastitis with- kept before the animals follow ing possibilities of infestation by worm. Pulpy kidney, according to Dr. Shaw, is a disease which effects young strong vigorous lambs at any period from three to four weeks of age until market time. A vaccine has been developed which will control this disease. out preventative control measures for -the- rest of the-herd will -re suit in heavy losses and in .some cases economic "ruin for dairymen, is the belief of A. L. Pullian county-agent at-large at the state college. Pullian recommends the follow tng 1 1 -point control program Keep the dairy bam clean, dry, well bedded and as light as possi ble; remove all possible sources of udder injury; use a strip cup to detect mastitis in its early stages; Isolate or place infected cows at the end of the milking string, use a separate milking unit for infected cows is possible, com pletely sterilige all milking equip ment after- each milking;, if herd is infected with mastitis, sterilize teat cups and. hands before milk ing each cow; use milking ma chinery according to manufac turers directions; treat infected cows 1 under supervision of i qualified veterinarian; q u a r a n tine newly purchased cows for four or more milkings to make sure they are clean before placing them with the rest of the herd raise own heiiers lor herd re placements. Guard Berry Field Against Damage by Bugs and Weevils ' Strawberry growers should be checking their fields now for spit tle bug and root weevil activity, says D. I -Lasnrussen, assistant county agent. v A one-half per cent rotehone dust is recommended- for spittle bug control The average plant ing requires $0 to 50 pounds per acre. Since rotenone kills by con tacting the, spittle bug. careful application Is necessary. The dust must contact all the whitish, fro thy spittle masses which are easily seen on fruit clusters, stems and leaves. Failure to control spittle bugs results in deformed fruit clusters and berries together with lower production per acre, i A commercial poisoned bait is yecornrnended for control of the adult weevils when they are pre enU This should be applied on the crown of . the plant at the rate of one teazpoonful to a plant, or in accordance, with the- manu facturer's instructions. Whether additional applications are neces sary will depend upon , weather conditions and the amount of wee vil infestation. ' V There is no hard and fast rule when to bait for weevils, which may be absent from some fields and a serious problem in others. In the individual field, weevils may cause spotted damage. Ras mussen reminds growers that weevils can move into new plant ings from adjacent old plantings, fence rows, and from various other host plants.
