Suicide Boat on

Two young SalenKmen yester
day looked over Japanese suicide
boat of the type they had been
ntimately familiar with in the
recent war. .
Clifford Herman. 510 Beck ave.,
as -a marine in the lrt marine
corps amphibious 5 division, was
. in a convoy which was attacked
by the murderous little craft near
Okinawa. Robert D. Brown, 895
Mission st, was a . seaman on a
PC boat in the far western Pacific
and saw the suicide crafts in
action during several engage
ments. ; ' ; s
The Q" boat they saw yester
day is being displayed in a tra
veling exhibit located "on Liberty
near State street by the Navy
Club of USA- They were con
structed by the Japanese to use
during their last ditch fight for
Japan and Okinawa. Powered by
a six-cylinder engine copied after
the Chevrolet truck engine, the
craft could make as high as SO
knots with their 500-pound car
go of explosives. The charges,
either .., depth or aerial bombs,
-were placed , in a compart
ment at the' bow of the 16-foot
' craft. The pilot .was strapped in
to the cockpit so that he couldn't

by leaders from Lebanon, Silver

long-range program was outlined
which included:
A U. S. forest service senior
scout camp at Pamilia lake at the
foot of ML Jefferson from. July
13 to August 17. The scouts will
work on the Skyline trail. Cas
cade council scouts will go to the
camp the week of July 27-Au-gust
10.
I An air scouts' army air corps
camp at McChord field, Tacoma.
Wash., July 21-29 and a sea scout
camp on Whidby island in Puget
sound, June 14-20.
t A one-week senior scout camp
ing trip which will start from
Camp Pioneer, include a 20-mile
pack-saddle trip from Santiam
Summit to Sunrise Shelter on
North Sisters' mountain, and re
turn by way of Belknap hot
springs. This tour will be held
August 10-17.
In late September a three-day i
senior Camporee will be held at
Camp Pioneer. The camp will also
be provisioned this fall so that a
Christmas week camp can.be held
there, Lyle Leighton, Salem scout
executive, said.
