Children Vie
In Dog Show
Children's handling of show
dogs, an annual feature of the
Salem Liom club all-breed dog
show, will be judged at the fair
grounds Sunday at 6:30 p. m.
Prize trophies will be awarded
to youngsters judged best in their
presentation of dogs in the judg
ing circle. Besides the grand
trophy, other prizes will be
awarded winning children in
each of four groups, the boys and
KirU between ages 6 and 12 and
boys and girl between 12 and 16.
Dog judging in all classes of
the six main groups will be con
tinuous on Saturday and Sunday,
beginning at 10 a. m. each day
and going through late evening.
Final judging of the beat dog in
the show, from the six dogs which
win top honors in the main
groups, wilt be conducted Sunday
night following the children's
event

spearhead the forthcoming build
ing fund drive of the Salem chap
ter of Disabled American Veter
ans, Verne L. Ostrander, build
ing corporation chairman, an
nounced Thursday.
No definite date for the cam
paign has yet been set by J. R.
Beard general chirman. but the
drive will take place this spring
Ostrander said. Members of the
sub-committee to aid the original
committee are: Hyatt Worthy,
John Baker, Willie Wilier, Ridg
ley Miller, Carl Greider, Donald

Snipers Nabbed
ASUNCION, Paraguay, March
20 -UP)- Patrols of police and gov
ernment soldiers have been fired
upon in the streets of Asuncion
by backers of the rebels in north
ern Paraguay, government sour
ces said tonight.
The informants declared the
sniping in the capital was done
by communist partisans and said
the practice had stopped after
President Higinio Morinigo's
forces had made a number of
arrests.
During the two week old re
volt the insurgents have gained
control of a wide area in north
ern Paraguay.

Housing Need
. WASHINGTON, March 20 -(IP)
"In-laws just can't live together,"
Fiorello H. La Guardia told the
senate banking committee today
in urging speedy action on a
long-range housing bill.
"Chaos will set In on this coun
try unless we start building
homes," said La Guardia. former
New York mayor. "There is no
thing in this problem that money
cannot cure. It will cost a lot
but it must be done."
Franklin D. Roosevelt, jr., told
the committee that a guaranteed
market for building trade labor
for 10 years" would curtail un
ion "restrictive practices." Roose
velt, national housing chairman
of the American Veterans com
mittee, agreed in answer to Sen.
McCarthy (R-Wis) that housing
costs are partly due to such practices.

fluid milk in the Portland milk-
shed, will be held in Portland
April 2, E. L Peterson, state ag
ricultural department director, an- 1
niunced Wednesday.
!Peterson pointed out that the
number of producing cows in Ore
gon, based on figures of the fed-
eral bureau of agricultural eco- j
nomics, has decreased from a peak '
of 293.0O0 to 251.000 on Jan. 1,1
1947. Likewise, he said, the vol
ume of milk produced in Oregon
dt ring 1916 was 7 per cent less j
than in 1945 and the lowest for
12 years. Consumption of fluid ',
milk in the Portland area, at the j
same time, is approximately 50.
per cent over 1941.
