writer for the Oregon Journal who
is retiring after he finishes cov
ering the current legislature, was
honored last night at a testimonial
dinner by state officials and scores
of legislators, lobbyists, and news
men at the Marion hotel.
Toastmaster was John W. Kelly,
long-time Portland and Washing
ton newspaperman and now secre
tary of the state postwar commis
sion. At the speakers' table were for
mer Governors Oswald West and
Jay Bowerman. both of whom
reminisced regarding their long
I association with Watson: Roy
! Meyers, dean of statehouse lobbyist-,
and Phil Metschan. Portland
! hotel and formerly active in state
' politics.
All paid high tribute to the re-
tirine writer as one of the out
standing journalist in state his
tory. Watson, who was given a gold
watch last night, joined the Jour
nal staff in 1906. He has worked
for that newspaper since then ex
cept for the time he was West's
secretary and a term as the state's
first corporation commissioner.

Preparations for the annual
Boy Scout circus to be held next
month were furthered Wednesday
by acceptance of major assign
ments by two Marion county scout
units, the first acceptances in the
Cascade council this year, accord
ing to Harry Michelsen, circus di
rector. Cub pack 53, Woodburn, under
Cubmaster Anton Halter will pre
sent a blackface minstrel show
with 32 boys participating. Boy
Scout troop 18, Liberty, smallest
troop in the council, signed up
100 per cent to give pioneering
demonstrations, Michelsen said.
The nine boys of the troop will
show their axemanship, do sema
phore signalling, wall scaling, and
will make an eight-foot lean-to. I
There will also be three boys from
the' troop who will receive their
tenderfoot investiture at the cir
cus. Salem Lions club members as
sisting in the circus are also
swinging into action, according to
Michelsen. Floyd Bowers, ticket
! chairman, has indicated that there
will be 12.000 tickets printed, and
that distribution will begin this
I Thursday.
Doing the ground work will be
! Henry Kropp, chairman of the
I stadium clean-up committee, who
with 50 Lions club members and
I 150 scouts will begin April 10 to
i clean the stadium for the circus,
I Michelsen said. Other Lions on
j the committee are Jerry Kelly,
( publicity chairman, and John
j Stark, general events director,
i Jim Bishop will be in charge of
j the huge downtown parade of
Boy Scouts from all over Marion

Judge Acts
On Gambling
Action by City Judge W. W
McKinney was taken Wednesday '
in the cases of eight men arrested
by Salem policemen in a gambling .
den raid early Sunday morning at
653 N. High st. Two others had
already forfeited $100 bail each.
Charged with bank, gambling,
John B. Urbie, Portland, was fined
$100 and given a 30-day suspended
jail sentence. Charged with gam
bling, Lee Wolfe, Salem, pleaded
innocent and trial was set for
March 21; George Mingenmeir, 158
S. Liberty st., and A. J. Waible of
Milwaukie were each fined $100
and given 30-day suspended sen
tences. Charged with frequenting a
gambling game, Don Parrett, Port
land, was fined $100 and a 30-day
jail sentence was suspended. John j
Garvey and Lawrence Sellers, j
both of Milwaukie, pleaded inno
cent and their trials were set for
April 4. Trial was not scheduled
for Frank CaldweU, Milwaukie,
who also pleaded innocent.
