Ramblings
By Rural Reporter j
i
The rural reporter gathered, at ,
a recent meeting, that Marion j
county farmers are already begin- j
ning to spruce up their farms in '
anticipation of the 4-H farm tours
to be held during the summer, i
There will be one in the north ;
end of the county arranged by ;
John Bannick of Brooks; one in
the mid-section to be arranged by
H. A. Barnes f Silverton and the'
south end of the county will be
looked after by Louis Hennies of
Turner. Jim Bishop. 4-H director,
and Ben Newell, assistant county
agent, are helping with the three
tours sponsored by the Marion
County Livestock association as
one of its numerous projects. It's
part of a move aimed at "keeping
them down on the farm."
t !
Charlie Evans of Independence,
prominent in valley livestock af-
i fairs, is advocating calfhood vac
! cination and slaughter-test to clean
! up Oregon and keep it clean from
! brucilosis.
j ...
! Clackamas county livestock folk
will meet February 20 for the
j purpose of organizing a livestock
association to affiliate with other
; western Oregon associations.
i
There are 230 livestock brand
inspectors in the state of Oregon.
Little has been done in regard to
: this in Willamette valley, but there
' ha been some cattle rustling here
; in recent years and a move is on
to bring more attention to brands
in this area.
Two familiar people at the val
ley livestock meetings now are
Walter Holt and Leo Spitzbart.
This is a favorable sign for the
success of next autumn's shows.
Both promise higher premiums and
better conditions at the fall shows.
H. N. Coleman, known for a
quarter of a century at Oregon
Slate college as "Pinky." is now on
sabbatical leave from the college
i and Ls leaving the college work
1 for good after 32 years as super
; intendent of official testing in Ne-
braska. Washington and Oregon.
