Winning Ways
Cats in Good Form;
2nd Tilt Set Tonight
By Jerry Stone
Sports Writer. The Statesman
Willamette's hoop squad climb
ed back into winning stride in
northwest conference play after
two straight losses as it last night
battered a ragged and tired Whit
man outfit, 63-32, on the local
floor. The teams meets again to
night, a prelim between the JVs
and Page-Woolen opening, pro
ceedings at 6:30
After the first five minutes of
the contest the only question of
the evening was just how high
the Cats could push their margin.
Elmer Schaake's boys were def
initely "on" three quarters of the
way as they potted uncanny shots
from every direction near and
far. On the other hand the Mis
sionaries were not only out of the
"groove" but a long way from it
a major portion of the fray.
From the time - - four minutes
into the fracas - - when Frankie
Page hit a 25-foot push shot to
knot the count at 4-4 the locals
were on the way, with Al McRae
and Ron Runyan providing most
of the "clutch" work. The Cats
walked off the floor at half time
with a 33-17 advantage.
The second leg was more of
same. The last two minutes of the
game however, produced the ma
jor fireworks of the evening and
jng the ball out of a scramble and
dribbling the length of the floor
for lay-ins.
McRae was king-pin scorer of
the tilt with 12.
Scotty Sebern, Bearcat guard,
is out of the series because of the
flu.
