Hospitals Plan
New Salary,
Hours Scale
Following the example set by
the states of California and
Washington, Oregon hospitals, in
cluding the two Salem institu
tions, have agreed on a new wage
and hours scale, personnel of the
local hospitals said last night.
The new scale, calling for a 44
hour, work week, monthly salary
of $190 td $225, two weeks vaca
tion with pay, two weeks sick
leave and a daily rest period, W3s
suggested by the Oregon State
Nurses" association meeting with
the State Hospital association late
in 1946.
Salem General hospital nurses
are on the new schedule which
became effective at the beginning
of the year. At the Salem Deacon
ess hospital a shortage of nurses
has temporarily held up installa
tion of the new schedule. Assist
ant Manager Irwin Wedel said
last night that he would ask the
Deaconess hospital board to es
tablish the 44-hour week and
pay schedule retroctive to Jan
uary 1.
The state institutions, most of
which are now on a 45-hour work
week with a basic wage of $180,
will shortly come under the new
civil service scale recently ap
proved by Gov. Earl Snell. under
this set-up wage scales will range
from $180 per month to $225. and
will include a two weeks vaca
tion period, one-month sick leave
and benefits of the civil service
Suit Filed to
Halt! Wasco
Utility District
THE DALHES, Jan. 2-(iP)-Pa-cific
Power & Light company and
26 citizens filed suit today to pre
vent the Northern Wasco County
People's -Utility District from
selling $225,000 in revenue bonds
for construction of a PUD system
in The Dalles. ,
The plaintiffs charged that in-
and state retirement plan. Sal
aries of Marion county public
health nurses, which range from
$175 to $200 per month, are not
affected by the recently adopted
work schedules.
The) Siataemrm. SoJom, Oregon, Friday. January 3. 1947 9
creased costs have made the
$475,000 bond issue authorized by
voters in 1940 inadequate to cover
a district-wide system. The com
plaint charged that the PUD's
proposal of "piecemeal" construc
tions was "a mere subterfuge by
which the district intends to use
the entire proceeds from the sale
of bonds for the sole and exclu
sive benefit of a small part of the
district, contrary to the purpose
fc-for which said bonds were voted."
The PUD was granted a fran
chise to operate in competition
with Pacific Power & Light in a
city election last May.
