Salem in September was 13th
among 42 northwest cities in the
dollar volume of building permits,
it was shown yesterday in a sta
tistical report of the Equitable
Savings and Loan Co. of Port
land. Salem's $132,244 estimated
value on new construction author
ized was 23 per cent lower than
the figure for September, 1945
The 42 cities shewed an average
of 18 per cent increase in value
of permits over a year ago.

state supreme court, Monday as
signed Circuit Judge George Dun

the trial of the state vs. Schiltz
in Clackamas county. He will sub

APPLE PICKERS PLACED
Apple pickers are now needed
in the Salem area, according to
local farm labor office spokesmen
who said yesterday that with the
apple crop coming on, transporta
tion will be provided for pickers
going from Salem to nearby or
chards. Calls from farmers indi
cate continuing need for workers
in late potato and filbert crops,
it was said.

A tractor semi-trailer driven by
Barney E. Fagan, Eugene, broke
a telephone pole at 12th and Mis
sion streets Saturday when the
trailer skidded after Fagan swerv
