Enstad Ststdtn-isn Dallas Correpondrnt DALLAS. Oct. 18 Outstanding 4-H club members of Polk county were guests of Dallas Chamber of Commerce at luncheon today when special county prizes and trophies were presented and later all club members were guests of the chamber at a motion picture show. Polk county, which many times has had what other communities might feel was more than its share of the top dairy records, not only of the state, but even of the nation, goes noticeably light on 4-H dairy clubs. This fact wai commented upon by Russell Daul ton, assistant county agent in charge of club work, at the lunch eon. Daulton Is Speaker "Boys and girls get all the dairy work and theory they want at home, was Daulton's explana tion, as he reviewed the 4-H club work of the county. Club members have increased from 345 in 1943 to 575 in 1946, and leaders from 27 to 68 in 1946. but less work was completed this year, Daulton said, and gave the high wages available for the club members in the harvest fields as a possible reason. Eva Jean Miller of Rickreall was givtn the Polk county health association trophy by Mrs. W. E. Knower of West Salem, president of the unit. Mollie Edwards won the Lions club beef trophy for her work in the "Beefy Beefers club." Wins County Agent's Cup Betty Jean Leppin of Bethel won the county agent's trophy as the outstanding 4-H club mem ber of the county. Glenna Gage of Bridgeport won the chamber of cofrtmerce cooking club trophy; Bobby Leth of Independence won the chamber's sheep trophy; Bet ty Murphy won the chamber's sewing trophy, and Happy Sleigh ter won the chamber dairy tro phy. Dallas Chamber of Com merce has given these trophies since 1937 and before that the Kiwanis club gave them. Th4 Stotsrsman. Salom, Orsxyon. Saturday. Octobw 19. 1948 7 Sut. Oct. 18 -7P)-A be lief that demand for corn will ex pand as a result of lifting of gov ernment restrictions on uses of that grain brought buying into corn futures today. Oats tended to follow the lead ership of corn, advancing for small gains in an active trade, but wheat was unable to exhibit any rallying power following the 5-cent break yesterday. Uncertainty regarding what action will be taken on flour ceiling, was depressing wheat. Wheat finished 'i to 2 cents lower. January. $2 00, corn was up 7s-l4, January $l.3T-M, and oats were unchanged to aj cent nigner, ixovemoer ou---?. Modern Miller, a trade publica tion, stated that. "Taking the country as a whole, experts ex press the belief that the winter wheat crop will go into the winter with condition above normal." Stock Leaders Slip Slightly NEW YORK, Oct. 18 -(-Scattered stocks made a little progress on the recovery side today while many market leaders were ne glected in slightly lower terri tory. Transfers of 920.000 shares com pared with 1,310,000 Thursday. Wall Street quarters thought that erractic shifts of commodi ties and livestock prices remained as a speculative and investment restraint for securities. , Timid bid ding was credited to the idea the list was in shae for a good tech nical comeback.
