Hunters Crowd Woods
By the Associated Press
Oregon's backwoods were dotted
with red hats today, as the state's
nimrods pushed over mountains
and trails in the opening of the
28-day deer season. No hunting
fatalities were reported during the
first day. Saturday, although an
11-year-old Indian boy was killed
earlier this week near Klamath
Falls by a companion practicing
marksmanship for the deer season.
Highways leading into the best
deer areas were crowded this
week-end. Bend was filled with
nimrods, and cars from all over
the west passed over the usually
quiet Santiam-McKenzie junction
n Sisters at the rate of more man
300 an hour. Restaurants and serv
ice stations in small forest towns
were jammed. At Grants Pass, so
many hunters applied for licenses
that the supply temporarily ran
out.
